Cooking A Salmon Fillet

When I was young I had a terrible experience with a salmon fillet in the school lunchroom. All caused by the lunch ladies not knowing how to properly cook a salmon fillet.

It's been more than 20 years but I remember the day as if it was yesterday. I was the last person in line and when I did finally make it to the lunch lady who dishes out the food, I noticed there was only one pizza left!! And then to the side there was full pan of slimy looking square things. It turns out these square things were broiled salmon fillets.

I remember looking at these in horror, hoping and praying the kid in front of me choose to eat what was in the pan instead of the last pizza. But who was I fooling!!! Pizza days in the lunch room was the absolute favorite day of all the kids. As he told the lunch lady he wanted pizza, he looked back at me with a big grin on his face.

I took a big gulp and looked shyly at the lady and asked, "No more pizzas?" and she replied, "No dear, looks like you will be the first to try our new menu item, salmon fillets, we just learned how to cook it this morning!".

Well that was great news, they just learned how to cook a salmon fillet this morning.

I took this horrible looking thing to my normal lunch table. I remember all the other kids laughing at me as they were holding their pizzas up in the air. I felt as if I was being ostracized, for what was on my lunch plate, something that I didn't even want. I should have been pitied not made fun of.

I remember how all the kids gathered around me to watch and laugh as I took my first bit of this yucky salmon fillet. It was dry and chalky in my mouth and I immediately spit it out.

This day has always stuck in my memory and the thought of eating another salmon fillet has always turned my stomach.

But one day about a decade later I was eating some leftovers that my parents had brought home from a restaurant and it was delicious! And I shortly after I had finished, I found out that I had just ate a salmon fillet, it was a fried fillet, covered in sauce so I really didn't recognize it.

For great tasting salmon it's absolutely necessarily to know how to cook salmon correctly. If you cook it improperly it will taste either dry and chalky or slimy and it will also look very unattractive sitting on your plate. But if you cook salmon fillets correctly, the taste can rival the most tender chicken or steak.
