Cutting Homemade Bread? Use Your Loaf!

Cutting homemade bread into level slices when it’s still warm and tastes utterly divine is an exercise in futility, with the squashed triangular remains of what was a handsome loaf all that remains when you’ve done. Sound familiar? Then read on because there is a solution that won’t whip you wallet, but will give you perfect even slices of bread.

I just adore freshly baked bread, not shop bought but homemade, usually from a bread machine though not always, sometimes kneading dough by hand is pleasurably therapeutic. But what isn’t pleasant or calming is cutting homemade bread nice and evenly – easier said than done, and I know all the tricks including a hot knife, but even that has limitations on a soft sandwich loaf.

Our first bread slicing guide was part of a box of odds and ends at an auction and bought because of a lovely tray I was after. Once cleaned up, the purpose of the contraption was more obvious. Hand made by a good carpenter, I often used to wonder who he’d made it for and whether it was a gift of love, or exchanged for money. I know but we should all dream don’t you think?

It worked an absolute treat and for the first time since getting married, which was also when we got our first bread maker, we were eating sandwiches you could put a spirit level on – not the ski slopes of old. Truly a work of art and I’d still be using it now if my husband hadn’t tried to help – don’t ask. But the sad fact was (once we were speaking again), we had to replace what was left of it.

You are not spoiled for choice with this nifty gadget, there are plenty of different styles to choose from and they are made using several different materials including hardwood. Some even store the bread and include the slicing guide within it, a real all-in-one solution.

There’s always a ‘but’ isn’t there? The trouble is in that according to the reviews, they don’t all work particularly well and some, well they don’t seem to work at all! Reading the reviews was amusing - some of the comments are very funny though I’m not sure the writers meant them to be.

I wanted a really good solid wood replacement, not plastic and stuck to my guns until finding just the right one which coincidentally was also the most expensive – revenge really is a pudding best eaten cold! The new bread slicing guide is a sold wood beauty which works an absolute treat.

The truth is though, since buying it I’ve seen one I almost opted for but declined to buy now working at a friends house, I wish I’d been more flexible on the ‘sold wood’ bit – though as it would have been cheaper, perhaps not!

Bread machines were the reason for the homemade bread slicing guide being such a big issue. I love baking then eating my own bread and have been doing it for more than twenty years now, the only downside ever was cutting the darn loaves properly.

If pushed to name my favorite and most useful kitchen gadgets, an adjustable bread slicing guide is well up the list. So, if you make your own bread and like most of us, you can’t cut it without thinking rude thoughts and leaving a triangular shaped wedge, you just might want take a good look at them.
