Enameled Cast Iron Vs Regular Cast Iron

Pots and pans have come a long way over the past 50 or so years. It seems like new metals and other materials are being created everyday in order to find that perfect piece of cookware that never burns food, but also retains heat for long enough periods of time. Enameled cast iron could be that perfect cookware. To make sure, let’s compare it against its closest and probably oldest relative, regular cast iron.

Regular cast iron is extremely reliable and long lasting cookware. The biggest downfall to it though, is that you need to season it regularly (almost every usage). Seasoning it seals the metal and gives it a slight non-stick behavior. Now compare that to enameled cast iron. This cookware has a smooth coating that washes easily and is completely non-stick. Enameled cast iron wins this round.

Kitchens are becoming the central gathering place in many homes today. This puts pressure on you to decorate and accessorize the area to make it attractive to your family and guests. Your cookware should be included in those accessories seeing that they will likely be out on the stove or used for serving dishes in your kitchen. Regular cast iron comes in one color, black. It’s probably more a grayish-black, but still only one boring, neutral color. It will not clash with anything because everything goes with black, but it makes no statement to anyone. Enameled cast iron is available in many colors, ensuring a beautiful, eye-catching accent piece right on your stove or island that coordinates with your kitchen perfectly. Also, the enamel is colored throughout (not just top coated with color) so that the color will never fade. Rank up another one for enameled cast iron.

In today’s market, more good features usually mean a high cost. That case still holds true here. Regular cast iron is almost always cheaper than enameled cast iron since non-stick and a variety of colors are additional features compared to regular cast iron. Overall enameled cookware comes at higher cost than most other cookware. The price could be over looked when you consider that this cookware will probably last close to forever. Regular cast iron wins here for its lower cost.

This battle between enameled cast iron and regular cast iron does result in a 2 to 1 win for enameled. A complete blowout by enameled could be obtained by justifying that the extra features are worth the extra cost. Maybe a few times of staring at cold, black regular cast iron while you season it for the hundredth time is all the convincing you need.
