What is Gelato

"Gelato" is Italian for "frozen" and it can be used for more than Italian Ice Cream. The first use of this type of desert dates back to the mid 1500s in and around Florence Italy. Florence is still considered the best place to purchase Gelato. In Italy authentic Gelato can be found at a local Gelatera (shop that sells Gelato) where it is made daily from fresh fruit and no preservatives.

What is difference between Ice Cream and Gelato

Italian Gelato is denser and has a richer flavor than traditional American ice cream due to the ingredients and the freezing process. Gelato is made from twice as much whole milk to cream verses ice cream that has twice as much cream to milk, which means it is much lower in fat than ice cream. No air is blended in Gelato vs ice cream that has as much as 50 percent air - therefore gelato is denser and more flavorful.

Gelto looks like soft serve ice cream, but with a lot richer flavor. Good Gelato has real fruit and will not look artificial.

How it works

Basic Gelato Recipe

Combine the following and put in the Musso Lussino Frozen dessert maker bowl:

  • Whole milk - 2 Cups
  • Heavy Cream - 1 Cup
  • Sugar - 1.5 Cups
  • Water - 2 Tablespoons
  • Vanilla extract- 2 Teaspoons

Chill and Churn for about 25 minutes and then check for consistency - similar to soft server ice cream - now you can now add in some fruit if you like for example fresh Strawberries or Blueberries and chill churn for another 10 minutes. Your Gelato is now ready for serving.

The real secret to making good gelato is the self refrigerating gelato makers - because you easily check the consistency as the machine is churning
