Most of the cooking is done by the mothers in the family. She has probably many wonderful recipes from her mom and grandmother that she would like to use. However, most of the ingredients the recipe calls for have gluten in them. You can buy mixes free from gluten where you can make your own cakes, cookies, muffins, bread, pancakes and waffles. So you can use the family recipe for these traditional favorites. It is important when cooking for your child that is on a gluten free diet that you are careful not to contaminate gluten free foods with gluten. This is done when you cook gluten meals without properly cleaning the area when you are using gluten free mixes and other foods. Be sure to wash your hands after using them in preparing foods containing gluten. Many individuals still have allergic reactions when eating gluten free food if it has been contaminated.
