There are many people living today that may not know if they are allergic to gluten. Some experience health issues when eating normal food and do not know why. What is even more important is those that cook with gluten can contaminate foods that are gluten free which also cause health issues for individuals allergic to gluten.

One of the biggest challenges facing many families today with children or spouse allergic to gluten is how to cook for them. Most moms or dads that do the cooking in the home are challenged in this area. The question remains, how can I cook for my child or spouse that must be on a gluten-free diet? The answer is of course preparing meals using products that are gluten free.

Finding Gluten Free Stores

Another huge problem for families with individuals allergic to gluten is trying to find stores that sell gluten-free products. Most of the local stores may carry some items that are gluten free or none at all. And when they do, they have limited quantities of products available. It’s very frustrating in trying to find gluten free foods that you can use from the local store. You probably wind up going on the internet in finding products that you can use for cooking the meals. If you do have a store in your area that sells gluten free products, you may have to travel some distance to get there. Be prepared to spend extra for these items. So, plan your budget accordingly.

Cooking With Gluten Free Foods

Most of the cooking is done by the mothers in the family. She has probably many wonderful recipes from her mom and grandmother that she would like to use. However, most of the ingredients the recipe calls for have gluten in them. You can buy mixes free from gluten where you can make your own cakes, cookies, muffins, bread, pancakes and waffles. So you can use the family recipe for these traditional favorites. It is important when cooking for your child that is on a gluten free diet that you are careful not to contaminate gluten free foods with gluten. This is done when you cook gluten meals without properly cleaning the area when you are using gluten free mixes and other foods. Be sure to wash your hands after using them in preparing foods containing gluten. Many individuals still have allergic reactions when eating gluten free food if it has been contaminated.

Conclusion

As you can see, gluten free cooking can be easy provided you make a few adjustments when cooking for your spouse or child that is allergic to gluten. You better be careful, your family may wind up liking some of the gluten-free prepared foods than those that contain gluten. Be sure to populate any store that sells gluten free products.
