How To Make The Best Guacamole?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Guacamole recipes are a dime a dozen. This classic dip made of mashed avocado and various seasonings is renowned worldwide for its easy preparation, mouthwatering flavor and versatility of ingredients, so it’s easy to see why so many home cooks have created their own signature guacamoles.

Of those distinct recipes, you’ll often notice many cooks proclaiming that their version is the best. While the thought of sampling every guacamole combination is enticing, it’s also completely impossible, so those claims will have to be left to the circle of friends and family that do get to try it. There’s one thing that’s for certain though. Although every recipe can be unique to it's creator, there are certain elements that automatically elevate a guacamole and anyone claiming that they’ve got the winning version should check to make sure they’re not missing any of these important elements.

  • What sort of avocados makes the best guacamole?

When making guacamole, the best type of avocado to use is a Hass avocado. They are a smaller variety that features a rich, buttery flavor and smooth texture. Not all avocados are the same so though you may be tempted to substitute the Hass avocados for the larger, greener variety that comes from Florida, don’t. The flavor isn’t the same and the Floridian avocados have a much higher water content that throws the texture off in a guacamole.

When you’re purchasing your Hass avocados, pick ones that are soft but still firm to the touch. A good indicator of a ripe avocado is the stem. If you can easily flick the stem off and see a bright green color underneath, that avocado is ready to go. If you’re purchasing your avocados ahead of time however, be sure to go for the firmer, non-ripe avocados so they won’t spoil in the meantime.

  • How do you properly season guacamole?

Though there is a huge variety of ingredients that can grace guacamole, there are a few which are essential. No matter your interpretation, a great guacamole must contain salt and acidity. The salt cuts through the fat of the avocados, giving it more depth. Be sure not to skimp on this seasoning! Start with a small amount and slowly add more as needed, tasting as you go. You’ll know you’ve hit the sweet spot when the avocados have achieved an enhanced flavor.

Acidity also helps cut through the fat and add dimension. Typically either lemon or lime is used, though if you’re feeling inventive you could experiment with other forms of citrus, like grapefruit for example. Like before, start with a nominal amount and taste your way to the right flavor.

  • About Mixing.

The best guacamoles have plenty of texture. When mashing the avocados it can be tempting to over-mash, creating a smooth, dip like consistency but authorities on Mexican cuisine have pointed out that the textural components of chunky avocados only adds to the overall flavor. You can also add plenty more interesting flavors and textural notes by including diced tomatoes and finely chopped onions to the guacamole.

  • What about herbs?

With guacamole, the overwhelmingly popular choice of herb is cilantro. It’s a perfect complement to the avocado, salt and lime mixture and is readily available in most grocery stores. Did you know however, that some people are actually genetically predisposed to dislike cilantro? To them, the herb tastes similar to soap. If you or any of your clan feels this way, never fear! Chopped green onions or chives are a great substitute that is every bit as tasty.

Technically, there is no such thing as the ‘best’ guacamole as taste buds are highly individual and everyone has different preferences. Following these easy guacamole tips however, will definitely get you closer to creating a recipe that’s perfect for you.
