Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen Part 2 – A Tool for Everything

Since there are so many gadgets for the kitchen out there today, a second part to my first article seemed appropriate. As I said in the first article, some of the gadgets can be one for the one task they are designed for. Some can be used for the “designed for” task and maybe for other similar tasks not thought of by the manufacturer. You are the only one that can decide if your kitchen needs these specialty gadgets for the kitchen. Use this information to help you make the purchase or not.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #4 (continued from first article) – Melon Baller

A melon baller is definitely one of the gadgets for the kitchen that started with one use, creating balls of melon, and ended up with many other usages and probably many more than mentioned here. Back in the fifties when most women stayed home as housewives and moms, it was expected to have good presentation skills for get-togethers and parties. The melon baller came about when housewives who painstakingly created “balls” of melon for easier eating than biting into a large wedge of the juicy fruit. These women would take two spoons and repeatedly scoop and shape each piece of melon. You can imagine how long this must have taken. Then someone created the melon baller. It is a spoon similar to a measuring spoon with slightly sharper edges. You simply scoop out the melon and an instant ball shape emerges. Many other usages include, but not limited to, spooning out the same amount of cookie dough for each cookie, balls of cheese and perfect chocolate truffle centers. This versatile tool is worth getting if you entertain at all and want to spruce up your table presentation skills.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #5 – Apple Corer

Keeping with the fruit theme for a bit, an apple corer does just that…easily cores apples. So instead of slicing an apple into wedges and then cutting off the core of each wedge, an apple corer can remove the core in one fell swoop, leaving only the edible part of the apple left to be cut in any desired shape. It is simply a metal cylinder with a handle extending out one end. The other end of the cylinder is a sharp edge to cut through the apple easier. Line the sharp end up with the center of the apple, push down through the apple and pull out the core. You can use it on pears and even tomatoes. Now that you mention it, it speeds up the coring of anything.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #6 – Meat Tenderizer

A meat tenderizer or kitchen mallet is designed to flatten thick food. It is mostly used for beef, pork and poultry since their muscle tissue (the meat) can be tough. Fish, fruit and vegetables are much too delicate to be slammed by a meat tenderizer. It is simply a metal or wooden mallet usually with a flat and spiked side. The flat side flattens the meat to a desired thickness. The spiked side flattens and tenderizes the meat by breaking up the muscle tissues with each blow. This tool is also good for crushing nuts, chocolate and crackers into crumbs. Pretty much, you never know when you are going to need a meat tenderizer, but it is assured a time will come up. It is definitely worth adding to your gadgets for the kitchen.

People come up with new uses of kitchen tools every day, meaning most of them can perform multiple tasks. Remember that just because you may not use these gadgets for the kitchen as they are labeled or intended, doesn’t mean you will never have a need for them. As always, buy quality gadgets from quality manufacturers. A well-known cutlery company would have all the tools mentioned here and is a very good source for life lasting products. Most don’t cost that much (your mixer or coffee maker will always cost more) so trying them out may be worth your while. Making a dish look better in less time is always worth it.
