Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen Part 4 – A Tool for Everything

Handling and preparing seafood can get a little tricky seeing that there are so many different types. That’s where specialty gadgets for the kitchen come into play. There are gadgets for both of the basic categories of seafood, shellfish and finfish. The shellfish obviously have a shell to contend with. The finfish have delicate skeletons that are not edible and need to be omitted. Find out how gadgets in the kitchen make easy work of preparing seafood for delicious meals.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #10 (continued from Part 3 article) – Oyster Opener

I’m hoping you can guess what an oyster opener does. But do you know what it looks like? It can either look similar to a paring knife (short, narrow blade) or it can have a spade shaped blade. Both shapes are designed to slip in the small opening between the two oyster’s shells. As you turn the blade perpendicular to the oyster, it should pop open. The straight small blade is sharp on one edge, where as the spade blade is sharp on both edges. The sharp edges are to help cut away the oyster meat from the shell. This whole procedure is called “shucking”.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #11 – Lobster Opener

Most of the meat of a lobster is in its tail. The tail is a cylinder shaped shell containing a cylinder shaped piece of meat. The easiest way to get the meat out in one piece is to carefully break the shell without crushing the meat. This is done by using a lobster opening. It is like a cross between a large nut cracker and a pair of pliers. The area close to the hinged end is bowed out to better fit the shell. Wrap the lobster opener around the tail shell and gently squeeze just until the shell cracks. You may have to crack the tail at various points to completely open it up.

Specialty Gadgets for the Kitchen #12 – Fishbone Pliers

As mentioned before, finfish have delicate skeletons that are inedible. Some skeletons can be taken out in one piece with proper filleting of the fish. Some of the larger fish leave their rib bones in the filets, meaning you need to remove them. They are often buried in the flesh. In order to keep the filet intact, you want to remove the rib with the least invasive tool. Fishbone pliers are designed to do just that. They can solidly grab onto each rib and easily slip them out without damaging the filet. They are ideal for salmon.

These gadgets for the kitchen are mostly a necessity if you prepare a lot of seafood in your home or as a chef. They do make great gifts for wedding gifts because chances are a new couple does not already have these specialized tools in their kitchen. It is also a good gift for a retirement party of someone who fishes in their spare time or is moving to a warmer climate because they will be spending more time around seafood and probably preparing it. A good quality knife manufacturer would have durable seafood tools like these mentioned here. They could also help you understand how to use them to their full potential.
