Pork is the meat which comes from a pig; there are many ways to cook pork and a large variety of dishes which use pork as a major ingredient. It has been said however that the most tasty and tender pork comes from spit roast pork that's a pig roasted on a spit.

In addition to the wonderful taste of the meat there are several other advantages of cooking pork using the spit roast technique.

These include:

·A spit roast pig is visually appealing- when raised on the bar a spit roast pig is a great sight to enjoy and a photographers dream. A very popular meal choice for weddings and makes a great photo for the wedding album.

· A spit roast pig allows all edible parts of a pig to be consumed- it has been known for organs such as pig ears and pig snout to be eaten by guests at a spit roast pork event. Although this is a rather literal reference to the point being made, most parts of a spit roast pig can be eaten with leftovers such as trotters used for stock.

· A spit roast pig is cost effective- when catering for large numbers a spit roast pig is a very cost effective meal option to choose. When compared to the price of individual meat joints the cost of hiring a spit roast pig is very reasonable.

· A spit roast pig allows for mass catering- as touched on above, a spit roast pig is ideal for mass catering. In comparison to the amount of sandwiches, quiches, pies and pizzas you would have to provide to cater for over 150 people the option of a spit roast pig is a much more efficient option.

Spit roast pork is not only different to traditional pork in the way it tastes but also the way it is prepared pre and post cooking. In contrast to the typical pork Sunday roast the pig used for spit roast pork is watered and covered in table salt before cooking.

Preparing the pig in this manner adds extra flavour to the pork and most of all the crackling, for some the crackling is the main attraction of the spit roast.

In relation to preparation, due to the shape of the pig and the succulent meat it produces it is difficult to slice the pork, creating large slices like a pork joint does. Instead the pork from a spit roast is shredded, either because it has been cut into small pieces or because it has fallen apart once cut.

For those health conscious pork lovers, spit roast pork can be a much healthier option, in contrast to hog roast pork. Because it is cooked on the bar, up a height, the fat and juices contained in the pig can drain. This however isn’t always the case; some pigs maintain all of their natural ingredients through the cooking process.

Staying with the topic of healthy eating however, the fact that a whole pig is cooked allows those wishing to eat the less fatty cuts of pork to pick and choose which part of the pig they wish to eat as opposed to being presented with one joint of pork like a traditional Sunday roast.
