Table Manners: Do\'s And Don\'ts

Over the years table manners have been greatly important. The crème de la crème always had the best of these essential manners while others simply ignored them and ate on. Obviously this sort of cycle has changed. Today, it’s either you have it or you don’t. You can imagine how embarrassing it would be if you display horrible table manners on a formal dinner. Just terrible isn’t it? Not to worry, below is a well detailed article on some do’s and don’ts that should upkeep your table manners.

Once you arrive:

Upon arriving on the table, there are just a few things you must do as an act to show good table manners. Just as well, a few things you must never dare.

Do’s: You should take your rightful seat without pushing around the table or disturbing anyone. After seating comfortably, you are free to raise your napkin up and place it squarely on your thighs as it should be

Don’ts: Though you could be hungry, you must never ever rush to your seat. This is a very important don’t in table manners. Take your time and sit slowly without pushing around the table or grabbing anyone’s attention. Once you take your napkin, unfold it with your hands; do not shabbily wave it around to unfold it. That move will grab the wrong attention, trust me.

Serving:

You are now seated, the serving begins, what must you do?

Do’s: When serving, you should first make sure not to spill any food around your plate, this will cause a mess. You can avoid this by not over filling your plate and instead just taking enough for the first serving. You should as well begin eating with the correct cutlery but only when everyone else around the table has finished serving.

Don’ts: The first thing you must remember not to do when serving is obviously not to overfill your plate. Thereafter, you must make sure you do not begin eating before others finish serving. Make sure you don’t keep the serving dishes around your plate, a move that will pretty much make you look greedy.

Eating:

Don’t worry; it really does get easier at this point when it comes to up keeping your table manners.

Do’s: Ok, you have the food on your plate; the next thing is eating it the right way. So, the first thing to keep in mind is to use the right utensil. What I mean is you don’t want to make a mistake for example using the bread knife as your dinner knife. Get the big picture? Apart from that, you have to take note of the basic table manners when eating. These include holding the fork and knife in the right way, eating at the right speed and such.

Don’ts: Basically, here are a few things people do that really displayed poor table manners. Doing the opposite should keep up your table manners. Some people over fill their mouths with food and chew with their mouths open. I don’t know about you but I find that terribly disgusting. Others Do this and try talking at the same time. Not doing this will bring the best out of your table manners.

Basically, those are the dos and don’ts of proper table manners. As promised, using the tips and tricks stated above should show some really good table manners. Mastering the formal table setting can also be quite a problem for many. Happy manners :)

Do leave behind your questions and feed-backs :)

Table manners...What's that? :) As you can guess I'm not sharp on my table etiquette. I don't like chomping sounds, mouth wide open full of food, rudeness and I always wait for everyone else to take their seat. Apart from that if I am alone, my fork is also my knife and I eat from the pot if it means me saving on the washing up :)

I always get confused about the forks. I'm OK unless there a bunch of forks laying around. LOL. I do remember my mother trying to tell me to just cut one piece of steak, then put down the knife and eat that piece before cutting another. Frustrated me. It is so much easier to cut it all at once, then eat it. So, yes, I'm lousy at manners. This article helps, though.
