The Formal Dinner Place Setting

Learning the formal dinner place setting can be quite a hard task, especially for first timers. It can cause massive embarrassment especially during formal dinners. After understanding this article you should have a clear picture of what a formal dining place has where and for what. Enough chit chat, lets get started!

The basic part of it:

The dining place is obviously where people dine; nevertheless, dining in a formal manner is very hard for people who aren’t very familiar with the rules. Most people who are attending formal dinners tend to see the table arrangement and fall into wonder really. However, it isn’t quite hard. This tutorial will be based on the formal arrangement in the image above. We will follow a clockwise manner for simpler comprehension. Here we go!

The napkin

the napkin is supposed to be in the water glass or on the table (on the top right of the main course plate). You should take it up and open it slowly without causing fuzz by waving it vigorously. Afterwards, you should put the fully opened napkin on your laps squarely. One thing you must not do with the napkin is using it for wiping your face or any other part. Don’t worry, I wont disgust you telling you of the things people have done with table napkins during formal dinners. It truly is a crazy world. Just remember to only use it to clear extra soup or oil remaining on your lip. A small touch should do it.

The water glass

next, is the water glass. Commonly with the napkin inside or to the top right of the dinner plate is its usual position. It doesn’t have anything hard actually. Just make sure you don’t use it for anything but water. Furthermore, you must never fill the glass to capacity with water, an act which will give you a problem balancing the glass so that you don’t pour it as you lift it up. Also, you must never consume the water before finishing your main course and with any food in your mouth.

The wine glass:

sequentially is the wine glass. A common mistake people make is confuse the water glass with the wine glass. The wine glass should be more elegant and as well have a smaller volume for the drink. That should never slip your mind. Make sure you sip the wine slowly and carefully, not like when in the bar taking shots. The wine glass rules are more or less alike to the water glass’ rules on a formal dinner setting.

The coffee:

the coffee cup and saucer should be the last bit of cutlery on your complete right. The coffee is commonly taken after the meal, never during the meal. The coffee cup stands out, especially because of its design and because it’s the only cup with a saucer under it. Before drinking the coffee make sure it isn’t too hot to burn your tongue.

The soup spoon:

as you make a direct left, you should find the soup spoon; A well rounded spoon between the coffee cutlery and the dinner knife. This spoon should only be used to take soup which is mostly taken as an appetizer. As you spoon out the soup, you may want to rub its underneath gently on the soup bowl’s inner side forcing some soup left behind to sink back in. This will prevent any soup from dripping on you. By the way, don’t let it burn you.

The dinner knife:

The dinner knife is basically the knife you will be using in your right hand to easily move the food to your fork which should be on the left. Don’t forget to never ever place the knife with food into your mouth. It’s a real sign of primitivism and the knife can cut your mouth.

To the center: the dinner plate

the dinner plate is obviously what you shall use for your main course, making it almost the simplest tool on the table. All you have to remember when it comes to the dinner plate on a formal dinner place setting is that you don’t want to mix all your food together. Some people don’t like the sight. What you want is to keep the stew aside from the rice. Something like that, you should get the bigger picture. A bit touching isn’t bad but don’t let them totally mix up. Lastly on the dinner plate, you should try and estimate the distance between the dinner plate and the edge of the table to about 2.”

On the dinner plate, yes ‘on’: the soup bowl:

this part may seem a bit strange for many people who aren’t familiar with the formal dinner place but it really is simple. All you have to do is remember not to overfill the soup bowl when serving in order to make it easier to consume it. Furthermore, you must remember to use the soup spoon for drinking from the soup bowl and not any other spoon. Furthermore, you must never ever make sounds when drinking the soup. It’s terribly disgusting for many.

Moving on to the left: the dinner fork:

the dinner fork usually to the left of your dinner plate must be used in your left hand with the ‘spikes’ facing the dinner plate from something less than a 90 degree angle. You must remember never to lick the fork when it is in your mouth and instead remove food from it without causing fuzz on the table. Good usage of the dinner fork shows some really good table manners.

The salad fork:

The salad fork is commonly used for eating salad as its name suggests. You can tell the difference between the salad fork and the dinner fork using their sizes on the formal dinner table. The salad fork is always the smaller one compared to the dinner knife because of their difference of service. The salad knife is also used commonly in correspondence to the dessert spoon (which will be highlighted) when needed.

The salad plate:

the salad plate is obviously for putting on salad. Though it isn’t common to many, this smaller plate is of importance especially after meals. The salad plate and the salad fork are used together for taking salad efficiently. Their small size should tell you never to take too much of salad, for it shows greed and things of the sort. Never confuse the salad plate with the bread plate however. Remember the salad plate comes first from the left.

The bread plate:

The bread plate is in between the dessert spoon and the salad plate. The only way to tell the difference between the two is by noticing the bread plate has a bread knife on it while the salad plate doesn’t. The bread plate is only to be used when applying and eating bread, which is supposed to support the soup appetizer of the whole meal.

The dessert spoon:

the dessert spoon which is northwards of the dinner plate is sort of deep and well rounded for desserts like ice cream. Due to the nature of desserts, the spoon must always be like that. You must never confuse this spoon for any other on the formal dinner table especially because of its position. Just as well, use it only for taking dessert.

Well, that’s it for the formal dessert table. Nevertheless you can find out more on formal table manners. If you like you can also formal dish recipes. If you need a closer look at the formal table setup images, please don’t hesitate to do so.

Don’t hesitate to ask your questions and well, point your points! :)
