I Am Unemployable, Thank the Lord

The birth of my first child coincided with the launch of my first voluntary bout of self-employment, which gave me time to look after him while "the current Mrs Dean", went back to work. I call her that despite the fact we've been together for 42 years. It keeps her on her toes.

Anyhoo, working from a small fourth bedroom gave me a certain amount of freedom and it allowed my wife to continue with her career knowing that our son was in the safe hands of his loving father. I enjoyed this lifestyle for a further four years, until with barely a whimper, the industry I was working in collapsed. I had to get a real job. In fact, at age 33, I had to get a new career.

Fortunately, God had gifted me with enough talent to get through almost any interview, and within a couple of weeks I had a new job in a new career. Unfortunately, God hadn't given me enough talent to be truly successful, and although I existed in my chosen career on what small amount He did gift me, I had to supplement it with a healthy dose of BS to survive. In fact, it was the same BS which got me the job in the first place. But all good things come to an end and I spun from job to job in what looks like two year jumps. I like to say that it took two years to get itchy feet. Everyone else says it took two years for my employer to discover I was useless. Both are true to a degree. It's also true that two of the businesses I worked for took a full tail-spin to disaster, and my leaving was neither my fault nor theirs.

Eventually, following a series of rows, principally because I thought my bosses were wrong, I ended up working from home and writing for a living. I have been ever since. So what did I learn over 30 years of employment?

  1. If I lose a boss I lose everything.
  2. If I want to do things my own way I lose a boss.
  3. It takes one hour and forty-five minutes to travel 13 miles if I leave home at 07.30. It takes just 25 minutes if I leave home at 07.20.
  4. If I was 10 minutes late in the morning I added one hour and twenty minutes to my working day.
  5. I also had to leave late (not allowed to leave early) which added another hour to my journey home.
  6. On average, I was wasting a couple of hours of my time sitting in traffic, or I was gifting two hours of unpaid overtime to my company. Whichever, it sucked.
  7. I also learned that I am grouchy, curmudgeonly, and difficult to work with. Don't argue, it's true.

So the final decision to work form home was a simple one to make. I do not make a great employee, so why be employed. So here are some of the advantages I discovered in making my final decision:

  1. If I have 100 clients I have 100 short-term bosses. If I lose one of them I have only lost 1% of my income.
  2. Nobody argues with me.
  3. I work with whom I choose.
  4. After remodeling my home and creating a dedicated office I have cut my commuting time to under 30 seconds.
  5. I am entirely flexible when it comes to unforeseen events.
  6. My destiny is in my own hands.

Now this last point frightens the bejabers out of some people, but whether you work for a business or a single client, you are probably only three mortgage payments from disaster. And I've already shown that an employee is at greater risk of losing everything than a freelancer.

So what can you do to escape the rat-race?

Working online is the new Industrial Revolution and your PC (or Mac for the fanboyz) is the new Spinning Jenny. Despite the fact that there are numerous scams online, there are also a number of genuine opportunities. I found that a little research is needed to separate the good guys from the bad guys and I set about dealing only with the Good Guys.

I start work, usually in my shorts (that's English shorts, not underwear if you're American) and T-Shirt, at 07.30 every week day. I usually stop at around 14.30 and do stuff I want to do. I'm learning everything I need to start additional businesses from the Good Guys (above), which supplements my own writing business.

To top it off, business is addictive. As George Katona said: "Business is like sex. When it's good, it's very, very good. When it's not so good, it's still good".

Make your own decisions, but let it be a real decision. Don't let life railroad you. Off you go...

Just start by writing what you're thinking. Let it rest an hour. Come back and edit all the cr*p out. Get rid of non-sequiturs. Add bullet points where you've given a list. I often don't know where I'm going when I start to write but walking away and coming back is helpful. There's a lot I'd change in the piece above, but I'm leaving it because you lot aren't as OCD as me lol.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is definitely the way to make a living. Its funny how those two year cycles seem to be found with many people. I have a resume that looks very similar. 2 years here, 2 years there. Never enough time to settle in, never enough time to create a pension. I don't think of myself as unemployable but I have the best boss in the world, myself.

Absolutely breathtaking, which means that as I internally read the manuscript, I find the words intoxicating, leading to hypnosis and a grand smile at the end.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It is a nice lifestyle but note I'm still doing seven hours a day without a formal break, and within that seven hours I'm not only doing the writing for my clients but I have to find the clients as well. Probably half my time is spent pushing the Crimsonleaf name out. Learning more about Affiliate Marketing will allow me to spend less time getting the work and more time doing it, plus of course there's the income I'll one day make whilst sleeping. Happy days.
