Big time copywriters demand big time money for writing copy. And they deserve it. Those men and women have put in the time and hard work to achieve that level of success. I'm very envious of those folks. To be in that elite group of copywriters would be a great accomplishment.
Fortunately you don't have to hire a superman copywriter to grow your business. Writing copy can be done by your own hand if you apply yourself.
You could be starting your online career or you may be a seasoned pro. It doesn't matter where you are in your business, you need words that sell on your site.
My earliest attempt at entrepreneurship was at the age of eight. With my nine year old sister being the owner/ boss I was instantly regretful of my decision to join her business. Being in business with a relative is never a good idea.
Our business was crocheting pot-holders. Can you believe a boy of eight crocheting? And now at 60 I still can't believe it. I could of gone fishing, hunting or any number of things an eight year old boy does.
As it turned out my job was to sell those pot-holders door to door for 10 cents each. We also had an up-sell, a slightly larger size, for 25 cents. Seriously, we had an up-sell, of course it almost never worked.
Even though the pot-holders were a good product they didn't sell very well. With the supply being much greater than the demand we quietly dissolved our partnership.
Thinking back, on our small business, I believe a copywriter could have saved it.
Writing persuasive copy is a skill that every web site owner should learn. The good news is, it is a learnable skill. Will it be easy? No, but it will be well worth the time and effort. One of the best copywriters in the world, Joe Sugarman, said "the best place to start, without question, is to start." Copywriting is the key to any successful business, online or offline.
To help you get started here's three books I recommend. Of course there are several great books on copywriting. And it's difficult to choose because of the quality in them all. Here are the three I have read.
- The Adweek Copywriting Handbook by Joe Sugarman
- Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples
- How To Write A Good Advertisement by Victor O. Schwab
These books can get you started toward writing copy if you study and practice. As I mentioned before there are many great books on copywriting. And you can benefit from any of them.
You can find these books easily on the web.
Good article. I own John Caples "Tested Advertising Methods" and I highly recommend it. It's helped me produce eye-catching, attention-pulling headlines.
Ray, Nicely written piece. I enjoyed and appreciate your suggested reading list.
