When learning how to knit, it can be a little overwhelming to figure out what you want to knit first. You want to make the perfect pattern, but have a hard time deciding. I don't want to break your heart, but your first knitting project will probably not be wearable, but it will be important to you. I still have my first project, it was a hat made from bulky yarn. I remember not knowing to weave in the ends, so I have yarn sticking out in various places of the hat. However, it's still special to me because it was my firsts knitting project. Here are few beginner knitting projects to help you get started:
Scarves
This is one of the easiest projects you can make. There are many free patterns online that only use the basic knit stitch. This is also a great opportunity to learn how to knit different colors together. One of my first scarves was to knit a certain amount of rows with the main color and then join the contrasting color (cc). You then knit the contrasting color (cc) for a certain amount of rows. Repeat those two colors until you have knitted 50 inches. You can make up any pattern and length.
Hats
If you are learning how to knit in the round, then this is a great project to start out with. Like scarves, you can knit a hat with the garter stitch. If you knitting with circular needles then you don't have to worry about sewing the sides up. My first hat I knitted was the straight needles and I had to sew the seams up.
Blankets
Like scarves and hats, you can make a warm and comfy blanket just with the knit and purl stitch. This can be a tedious project because there can be up to 90 stitches on one row and each row can take up to 15 minutes to knit, depending on how fast you are. I would recommend you have another project on the side so you can take a break from the blanket.
Headbands
I have made about four headbands and they each took me about a week to finish. If want to learn how to make an i-cord, then I would suggest you start out making a headband. It took me awhile to learn it, but it's still a technique to learn for a new knitter.
Toys
These are my favorite! Although, I would consider this a beginner/intermediate type project, I would still recommend this as a beginner knitting project. Toys are typically made with double pointed needles and you usually work in sections. I would recommend online classes or a knitting book. With online classes you get step-by-step instructions and you can go at your own pace.
Whether it's a scarf, hat, toys, or even a sweater, as long as you can knit the garter stitch, then you can knit any one of these projects. There are great books, videos, and blogs out there that can help you further your knowledge on learning how to knit. As long as you have the desire to learn, then you can become a great knitter.
