Choosing A Cross Stitch Pattern

Learning how to pick an easy pattern for a cross stitch project can be simple and fun. There is a huge variety of cross stitching patterns and designs available, whether you are just starting out or are an expert cross-stitcher. From easy cross stitch patterns to the most intricate and complicated designs, cross stitch is ideal for any skill level.

There are two different types of cross stitch:

1. Stamped Cross Stitch. With stamped cross stitch, the design is already printed on the fabric. It is easy to follow since the Xs are stamped straight on to the fabric. By following the instructions and using the right colours in the right place, you can create a design that can be completed quickly and easily. Stamped cross stitch is great for beginners and those just starting out learning cross stitching. Everything is provided for you in these kits - instructions, appropriately colouredthreads, embroidery hoop, a needle and your stamped fabric.

2. Counted Cross Stitch. Counted cross stitch is the more popular and traditional type of cross stitch. In this type of crossstitching, the pattern is NOT on your fabric, it is blank. You use the pattern instructions to create your design straight on to the material – you have to determine the centre of the fabric, you have to prepare the edges and you have to be able tocount stitches. By carefully following the instructions and using the right colours in the right place, your picture will end up looking like the design. Everything is provided for you in these kits - instructions, appropriately coloured threads, embroidery hoop, a needle and your fabric. Counted cross stitch projects produce wonderful results.

Cross stitch patterns can be purchased singly in kits or in a book at craft stores, book stores and online. Libraries often carry books of cross stitch patterns as well. Detailed intructions are included in these cross stitch books for basic styles such as straight lines to more advanced filled-in styles such as letters, borders, flowers, just to name a few. Other cross stitch books available explain the different styles of stitching. Each pattern of cross stitch concentrates on a particular style of stitch and you determine which pattern you like depending on the stitch style.

For those more experienced cross-stitchers, you can have a go at trying to make your own patterns. By designing your own cross stitch pattern, your work will be completely original and you will get a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. You can create a design yourself using graph paper or alternatively there are cross stitch software packages available for purchase.

Once you have completed your cross stitch pattern, the next step would be to put it on show for all to see. The best way to display your cross stitch masterpiece is to frame it.

There are many different cross stitch designs available, so why not start with one of the many easy cross stitch patterns and then progress to a more advanced cross stitch designs.
