Discovering How To Cross Stitch

Learning how to cross stitch is not a difficult thing to do. It is very similar to embroidering. Once you understand the basics, you will need the proper equipment, to do your best work. Here is a look at the method, and some of the things that you will need.

Basic Stitching

There are three basic stitches, when it comes to cross stitching. The main aim is to form an "x" pattern. This can easily be done by placing the needle on the underside of the fabric. Pull the needle and thread (floss) through, but do not tie a knot on the end of the floss. Once the stitch is through, hold it with your finger, to keep it in place. Next, simply repeat the process.

If you want to make half or quarter stitches, that is easy, too. Half stitches are simply one half of an "x" pattern. Quarter stitches are made by producing small half stitches. Variances in patterns can help to make more interesting designs.

Supplies

Graphs are patterns that you follow with your stitching. This is what makes the lovely and interesting designs. The fabric used is called even-weave style. This is a special kind of fabric, made specifically for cross stitching. Fourteen thread count fabric is a good style for beginners.

It is best to use what is known as a tapestry needle. The most convenient sizes are 24 or 26. These needles do not have sharp points, and the eyes are large enough to allow for easy threading.

The next things you will need is floss, scissors, and an embroidering hoop. Even though the floss contains six strands, you will usually only use two at a time. With finer fabric, you may only need to use one strand. An inexpensive embroidering hoop works well to keep things in place. Remember to remove the hoop when not in use, and you can avoid unnecessary hoop marks on the fabric. It may be best to invest in a quality pair of embroidery scissors, if you plan to use them a great deal.

Summary

If you are interested in learning how to cross stitch, you will need fabric, hoop, needles, floss, graphs, and scissors. Basic stitches are made to form an "x" pattern. For half stitches, make half of an "x". Quarter stitches are made from partial half stitches.
