So you’ve discovered quilting and are keen to take it up as a hobby. The very first thing that you will need, is to discover exactly what the essential quilting supplies for beginners are, so that you can make a start with your new hobby knowing that you have everything ready to go.

Learning about the supplies that you will need for your new hobby is great fun and the fun will continue when you have those essential quilting supplies for beginners in your hand and you can actually embark on your quilting.

Quilting as a craft, doesn’t actually demand an awful lot more than a good sewing machine, threads, needles and scissors but there is such a wide variety of lovely supplies that are available that will enhance the enjoyment of your new hobby.

Essential Quilting Supplies for Beginners – The Sewing Machine

While it is possible to sew your quilt without the aid of a sewing machine and some people prefer to do their quilting that way, a lot of people do use a machine and this is a particular bonus if you are busy and time is of the essence.

At the very least you will be wanting to use your machine for piecing your quilt blocks together. Whether or not you continue to sew by hand or machine after having done that is entirely up to you.

Quilters on the whole would agree that the most necessary piece of quilting kit is your sewing machine and it stands to reason that if you will be using a machine, then you will want to buy the very best machine that you can afford.

There are a lot of machines just made for the job of quilting and as most quilters will only use their machine for sewing a straight line, don’t worry too much about buying a machine that has many different stitches.

Essential Quilting Supplies for Beginners – Cutting Tools

Other essential items for beginner quilters will obviously include some sort of tool to cut fabric and paper with. If you choose scissors, then make sure that you have one pair that is kept only for cutting fabric and one pair for paper.

Cutting paper with scissors, takes that sharp edge off quite quickly. You may decide that you would prefer a rotary cutter and mat, as this is more efficient at cutting than scissors.

The mat is required to protect your working surface from the rotary cutter. The rotary cutter can be used to easily cut several quilt blocks simultaneously and save you some time.

Essential Quilting Supplies for Beginners – Fabric

A lot of people who do quilting will use fabric that is 100% cotton. This is because the fabric will shrink a little bit but 100% cotton fabric will shrink evenly. If you use cotton with a mix of other fabrics you may well find that the other materials shrink at a different rate to your cotton, leaving the material uneven.

The sheer volume of pattern and colors you have with 100% cotton fabric is truly unbelievable and you will have no end of fun deciding on the material that you will buy for your quilting project.

Essential Quilting Supplies for Beginners – Threads Pins and Things

For your quilting project, you will also need a good quality thread. Cotton thread is good, and with long-lasting strength and a high luster you won’t go far wrong. Some machines don’t work so well with a lower quality thread so to save time and money, make sure you purchase a better quality of thread at the outset.

Pins are another essential quilting supply for beginners and there are a few varieties of pin to choose from. Everyone has their own preference so you might decide to choose pins that have a bright colored head, a straight pin, or a T-pin. If you have no idea which pins you might like, why not get a few different types and try them to see which you like the best.

As well as pins, you will also require some needles and a gadget to rip seams.

Some people who do a lot of quilting, swear by having a pin board near to their work station so that they can pin fabrics together to try out various combinations of color or material and even pin ideas that they have found in magazines. This is obviously a good idea and will keep your pieces of fabric up together as well as your magazine ideas.

So there you have a basic list of essential quilting supplies for beginners. Embark on your own quilting supplies list now and do have fun with your new found hobby.

Quilting "stuff" can really start to add up! I really like the specialty rulers. I have triangle shapes, square ones in many sizes, a wavy one, and one just for log cabin patterns... But you are correct, a person can begin quilting with just the minimum of stuff.
