What is a false French seam?

A False French Seam a type of seam that closely resembles a French seam but it is different in the way that it is made. When making a false French seam the process is started with the right sides being stitched together, whereas on a French seam you begin Sewing with the wrong sides together. They both begin with a plain seam, and are easy to make. They are just made on different sides of the fabric. A false French seam has a very finished appearance and so it works well when use on lightweight and transparent fabrics. Use a False French seam on lightweight and transparent fabrics to finish shaped and closely fitted seams.

Steps to make a false French seam Step 1:

You have decided you want to use a false French seam on your next sewing project but you are not sure how to begin. It is actually quite an easy process and starting is one of the easiest things about a false French seam. You will begin your false French seam by sewing a very simple plain seam. You want to make sure the right sides of your fabric are together before you start sewing. Baste along the intended seam line and press the seam flat. Next sew a permanent stitch line along your baste line and remove the basting stitches.

Step 2:

After the plain seam is in place you will take your best pair of small scissors and trim one side of the seam allowance to ¼ inch, and one side to ½ inch.

Step 3:

Fold the seam allowances in toward each other and pin in place. Place your pins along your fold lines. Line your folded edges up with each other and baste them together about halfway between the fold line and the seam line. Make sure that your fold lines are even with each other and aligned correctly. Both sides that you have folded should be the same length once you have sewn them together.

Step 4:

You are almost done with your False French seam. This is the final step. You should be proud of yourself you are almost at the finish line. There is just one more thing to do. You need to sew the folds together. You are going to want to use either a slipstitch or a whipstitch. Sew along your folded edges. Your stitching should not show. After you have finished sewing you will press the seam flat again and you are done.

Now you are done with this seam. You have learned how to make it and have it in your sewing repertoire for next time you want to make a delicate garment out of your favorite chiffon fabric.
