Getting Started With Building Wood Projects

Wood projects to build do not have to be difficult or time consuming. All that is required is desire and a little time. Some people do not think they are talented enough or gifted to work with wood. I disagree, woodworking is for everyone. I have a friend who buys wood already cut and sanded and then burns an image on the prepared wood. They look very nice and he is planning on using them for Christmas gifts. His efforts made me realize that woodworking encompasses many areas and does not focus on anything in particular. If it involves wood it could be labeled wood working. I know some people may disagree with this definition but they are usually the professionals that have worked long and hard to perfect their art. Now that all that has been said, let’s look at what it takes to get started.

I suppose you want to know how difficult it is to get started. Again, this depends on the project you are doing. For example, my friend I mentioned earlier paid $20 for a wood burning kit, $2 for tracing paper, and about $15 for a few prepared pieces of wood. Also some time after work to trace the desired image and then burn it. He has put a minimal investment of time and money and has created some wonderful Christmas gifts.

On a side note: he says it is very relaxing and he enjoys doing it. The example about building a deck could include many tools, screws, nails, and materials costing several hundred dollars. The best advice I can give is do research and seek someone out that can give you pointers. Most of the big home stores, like Home Depot and Lowes, usually have all you need in one place. Therefore take your time and have some fun with it!

Now that you have decided on a project, get started. I have found in my experience that a project usually starts out with the best intentions but could get out of hand rather quickly. Note: I must emphasize the importance of starting out where you are comfortable and go from there. Hopefully this will not happen to you and you will finish your project and be pleased with the results. However, if this is not the case then do not give up. There are many different things you can do, big or small, that will interest you.

Keep looking and trying new things and when you find one that works for you, stick with it. Focusing on one kind of project will give you valuable experience. The experience you gain can then be applied to other kinds of projects or be used to give advice to others. The big thing I forgot to mention is confidence.

The more you do, the better you get, the more confidence you gain. The confidence you gain can be used for good or evil. That is to say your confidence can get you in trouble quickly so be aware of it. For example, successfully building a toy does not mean you can build an ocean liner! I know from experience, I thought I could build a wood car! So focus on one aspect of woodworking before trying another.

If you are anything like me, you may get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Therefore once you have gotten good at one aspect it may be time to learn another aspect. For example, if you are getting good at building children’s toys using flat pieces of wood it may be advantageous to learn carving techniques to add dimension and character to your toys. For example, my friend who is wood burning is getting good at it and I suggested he may want to add color by painting the wood. He loved that idea because he likes sports and wants to add color to his emblem replicas to make them more realistic.

The sky’s the limit as far as what you can learn and incorporate into your projects. I suggest taking one aspect of you likes and build on it over time like my friend the wood burner. He started out looking for something easy to make Christmas gifts and started wood burning, then incorporated shadowing and details, and now he is trying painting. The point is to start out slowly and build on it. Enjoy the process and have lots of fun!
