How to Create A Memory Wire Bracelet

If you're like me, surely you've been in a store, seen some jewelry and thought to yourself, it can't be that hard to make. And why pay for a piece of jewelry you like, but that is surely overpriced. Or maybe you've found something you kind of like, but the beads aren't quite the right shade. You've always wanted to make some beaded jewelry for yourself, but don't know where to start.

The good news is you can start right away. Just visit your local craft store and with some basic tools and supplies, you can start creating any number of beaded bracelets and make a whole new jewelry wardrobe by the weekend.

Supplies and Materials

First, you'll need to invest in a few tools. When you get to the craft store don't worry about the array of tools you see before you. The good news is you only really need two. If you decide to build your jewelry making technique, you can always purchase the tools you need as you go. These are the supplies you'll need:

  • Round nose pliers
  • Flush cutters/memory wire cutters*
  • Beads in your selection of colors and sizes. Usually 4 to 6 mm are best
  • Bracelet-sized memory wire
  • Two small charms with jump rings

That's it - not too much to buy right? You can purchase the specialized memory wire cutters if you'd like but they can only be used for memory wire jewelry. The advantage is that when you cut the wire, the wire will be dull. If you use any other tool to cut your wire (like I do - an old cutter from my husband's tool box) be sure to file it down - believe me that wire can be sharp and will catch on clothing or you can even scrape yourself.

How to Bead It

Lay out all your supplies in front of you. One thing you may want to get is a bead board to measure out your beads and to lay out your pattern - but it's not necessary. Measure out your memory wire. Pull out a length of about 5 inches. Do this a total of three times for 15 inches then take about 3 more inches to account for the looped ends. Cut out your memory wire.

Next, take your round nose pliers and grip the wire about half an inch from the end and bend it to make a 90 degree angle. Now grip the wire at the end and bend it back towards itself in a loop to the beginning of the angle. You've now made the end of your bracelet.

Lay out your beads in a pattern of your choosing. Once this is done, start putting them on the wire. When you have half an inch to an inch left, repeat the process to make a loop at the end.

Now it's time to take your charms and jump rings in hand. You'll need to create enough of a space to place your charm on the looped ends. You do this but gently wiggling the jump rings back and forth with your pliers. Don't pull them apart but rather back and forth. Put one charm on each end of your bracelet and close up the ring.

And there you go! Your own custom designed bracelet. Have fun with the process and explore all the beaded options you have.
