How To Decoupage with Fabric

While most crafters perform their decoupage art on pictures and plates, most do not realize that it is also possible to decoupage actual fabric onto items. If some pieces of favorite fabric just need to be showcased, they would make wonderful candidates for using for a spectacular decoupage project.

The art form of decoupage allows a person to attach paper, pictures or other assorted items to a base such as picture frames, lamps or other types of furniture in places they will not be bothered often. In this way, a precious picture, writing or photo can be displayed while at the same time jazzing up an otherwise bland piece of furniture or knickknack.

Most furniture typically has had layers of paint or laminate applied to it for protection and in order to add the decoupage fabric to it these layer must be removed and the surface cleaned. The laminate or paint can be removed by sanding with a block sander or electric hand sander then wiping down with a damp cloth to clear away residue. A smooth and level surface clear of old surface laminate or paint and clean of any sanding residue will ensure that the glue will adhere to the furniture securely. The part of the piece of furniture which is not intended for decoupage placement may then be painted or stained as desired.

When cutting the fabric to place on the furniture, it is recommended that the pieces of fabric cut a little smaller than the area to be covered, as the fabric will stretch. The fabric will be much harder to cut once the decoupage glue has been added. Ensuring that any frayed ends have been trimmed prior to attaching to the furniture is also suggested. With both the piece of furniture and the pieces of fabric prepared, the decoupage process can be started.

Decoupage with fabric can be performed in two different ways. The first is to add the glue to the furniture and then place the fabric on top, while the second is to add the glue directly to the fabric, then place it on the furniture. I personally would advise the first option as it allows much easier manipulation of the fabric once placed, as you will need to both select the right location and ensure the proper stretching of the fabric. A solid layer of glue should be applied on top of the fabric, once it has been properly placed and allowed to dry. This top layer seals the fabric and provides a protective barrier.

Street Talk

Thank you for the great information! I have several old pieces of fabric that belonged to my great grandmother. They are getting frail and I have wanted to find a way to preserve them in a decorative way. These are pieces that she had for curtains and such that remind me of home and my childhood. This was extremely helpful!
