Everyone has hobbies and interests ranging from the mainstream interests to the ecclectic and obscure. What I'm going to look at in a series of articles called "Is It Art?" is whether other people would consider your hobby an art, or if they just think you're a weirdo engrossed in something that no one cares about.

What I want to do is find groups of people who do things in their spare time that not too many people know about, and shine a spotlight on them and their activities. Consider it a series of exposes, where you get to learn about the interests of your neighbors, most of whom are 'closet artists'...

To get what that means, see if you agree with this statement:

"Laborers work with their backs. Craftsmen work with their hands. Artists work with their hearts."

That makes a lot of sense to me, and what I think it means is that everyone is an artist in their own right. As long as someone is passionate about their interest, and that passion comes across in what they do, then their interest could be considered an art.

Not everyone would agree with that statement; but that's great! That's just what I want to highlight with this series. There's so many different interests in the world that it's impossible to keep up with all the things that are going on. The art community can't keep up with all the hobbies that are popping up, and while everyone who gets involved in a hobby considers their hobby an artform, I want to know what everyone else thinks. (So call me shallow, but I'm always interested in what other people must think when they see me walking around with my newest attempt at 'art'.)

I'm hoping that people will speak up and let me know just what they think about the ideas I'm going to post. There'll probably be a lot of idea bashing, fun poking, and general comments questioning the mental condition of the 'artists' I'll profile. Along with that though, there'll be people who really like what the 'artists' are doing.

Everyone has different tastes; food, clothing, people, t.v. shows, and of course art! I never realized how many people in the world shared my tastes in doing weird, off the wall things. Some even consider me an artist at my off the wall skills. I'll let you decide, and I'll keep you up to date with my blog.
