Most people will consider this a strange subject to write about, but I feel it is as important as learning the art of knitting. After all yarn needles and patterns are essential tools that require correct storage.
MY PRESENT STORAGE SYSTEM
I must admit that my present storage methods are not very good. Having taken a break from knitting, during this glorious and exceptional summer that we have just experienced. It is now time to get organized and prepare for creating knitted items for the fall and winter days that lie ahead.
This is how I have stored my knitting craft. Most of my yarn, patterns and needles are kept in plastic bags and boxes. I have never considered it important to buy a proper storage system until now. It is generally when looking for something that I realise this method is not a very good one. The main problem being that my needles tend to get damaged or lost with this slap-dash method. Also, the amount of times I have received a needle-stick injury from putting my hand into a bag of yarn is unbelievable.
KNITTING BAGS
As time goes by with knitting and most crafts. Tools', accessories and yarns from previously completed projects tend to accumulate. Such as, items that will come in handy for other projects and things that are just too personal to discard. Based on this it really is important to look after these items.
There are so many knitting bags and storage units available, that have been specifically designed for keeping tools and patterns in good condition. Some of them are quite bulky, while the bags come in various shapes, sizes and colors.
Depending on how much equipment you have acquired, I suggest going for a knitting bag with pockets. These come in handy for smaller items such as darning needles, pins, buttons and ribbons. Plus larger pockets are good for storing and protecting patterns.
The main part of the bag could be, dedicated for storing yarn. Also, zipping or closing everything in protects the yarn and knitted items from dust.
KNITTING NEEDLE ROLL
Knitting needles, however, need be stored separately to prevent them from damaging the knitting bag and slipping out. Having a needle roll, is the perfect way to store knitting needles as pairs are kept together. Rolling the holder also ensures that needles are kept straight and free from scratches or damaged.
MAKE OR BUY
Depending on whether sewing is a passion, I would definitely recommend buying these specially designed knitting bags and needle storage organizers. The main reason being, they are, made from sturdy materials that last longer and protect your craft items from dust and damp. They also contain all the pockets you will need to store your craftwork safely and keeps everything organised.
