Looking For A Mini Sewing Machine?

Okay, what exactly is a mini sewing machine? Are you visualizing one of those cute little Hello Kitty sewing machines? I admit, they are darling to look at and what little girl wouldn’t want one of those? However, if your child is age 7 or over I urge you to keep looking. These mini sewing machines are simply toys and certainly not worth the expense.

Janome has a Hello Kitty model that is a REAL machine with an enticing style appealing to kids. But at $200 with less than raving consumer reviews – there are better options.

A Real Sewing Machine is a Better Choice

An excellent sewing machine for kids or a beginner of any age, can be found for less than $100 and will allow your child to create projects she (or he) can be proud of. These are not mini sewing machines, but then they are light enough and simple enough for children to operate on their own.

As for the style, they are fairly plain for the most part, but can be jazzed up if desired with stickers or those little stick on jewels used for cell phones and fingernails. You can let your child decorate the machine as she wishes as long as it doesn’t interfere with the mechanics.

Look for Simplicity of Design in a Kids Sewing Machine

Kids sewing machines have minimal built-in stitches and other features which ensures that she won’t be overwhelmed with too many options to learn. As for projects to sew there are thousands of ideas available all over the Internet and in books that are simple, but useful and your child will be able to tackle them without too much help from you.

Brother and Singer companies each have particular models that are perfect for a budding sewist. By purchasing a simple, but quality machine you are showing your child that you support her interests and can supply her with the right tools to grow her abilities. Sometimes making sure kids get the right tool can make the difference in keeping an interest or giving up out of frustration – and that is a pity.

Do Your Research Before Buying

When researching which kids sewing machine to buy, read carefully through the descriptions and understand what the machine can and cannot do. Also peruse the user reviews for good tips in avoiding common mishaps. This will aid in a better sewing experience for your child.

Buying a mini sewing machine like the Hello Kitty model is fine if you’re pretty sure that your child is simply playing at sewing and not really interested in developing a long term skill.
