N Scale Model Railroading

Modeling can be divided into different scales (or sizes). The scales vary from G scale (or Garden) which is usually the largest scale in modeling and this scale is so large that most people build this type of model railroad outside, hence the name Garden scale. Other scales are: O (and also O-28), S, HO, N and Z, with Z being the smallest scale (or gauge). There are some other scales referred to as HOn30 which use HO track, but prototype the size closer to O scale.

Present day model railroading has become very detailed and high tech. It used to be you could slap some track on a flat surface and run some trains around. New trends have started that actually emulate a real railroad, right down to the detailing on the locomotives and freight cars. The actual operation of the model layout has even been computerized with digital command control and wireless controllers.

There are specialty companies that just make detail parts in specific scales (G, O, HO, or N) right down to specific types of air conditioners, couplers, hand holds and any other railroad part you can think of. Some companies even get right down to the rivet detail on the metal parts.

Model railroading has been around for a long time, but it has been taken to a new level in the past few years. Model railroad layouts are being constructed with accurate detail and many look so life like that you would think it was a real scene. Many model railroaders even take pictures of real locations that they are going to model, even down to using the rock and dirt from the location to re-create the scene in a miniature form. One article that was published, the author and model railroader configured his basement where he was building his model railroad so that he could emulate winter and thunder storms by installing an HVAC system to control temperature and humidity for rain and snow to develop.

Modeling in N scale is best if there is little space available to build a large scale layout. It is also a good selection because there has been a big increase in the manufacture of N scale locomotives, freight cars and passenger cars. Some manufacturers are also designing freight cars that have been “weathered”; this is a technique (often using light washes of paint) that makes the freight cars look like they have been outside for a long time, as they would appear on a real railroad. Another manufacturer even offers decals of graphetti that can be applied to freight cars to make them look liked they have been tagged as in the real world.

So if you are interested in modeling and thought you did not have the space, try checking out N scale modeling!
