No Excuse Sewing Room Ideas

When looking through quilting or craft magazines, I love to drool over the sewing room ideas that are sometimes displayed. I dream of the day when I will own one of these rooms myself!

Marie Osmond’s sewing space for instance is huge and complete with plenty of stored fabrics (folded carefully of course) and spools of threads in all colors. The furniture is top notch and the walls are accessorized with tools and projects both finished and in the making.

Marie is the picture of contentment, happily sewing away on her Janome 11000. I could easily spend months in there….just bring me food now and then!

Another woman I read about bought the house next door to her and turned the whole house into a giant sewing room! She had a long arm business and the master bedroom served as the perfect area to meet those needs. The house also doubled as a place to give classes and have late night sew-ins. Wow.

Sewing Room Ideas In the Meantime

Until the time comes when that dream room comes along, a basic sewing room or even a corner somewhere is all that’s needed to create anything you want. There is no excuse for not sewing if you really want to. The basic necessities are as follows:

  • A sewing machine table (at least 3 feet long)
  • A sewing machine (obviously)
  • Large plastic tubs or shelves to store fabric and batting
  • A thread caddy and bobbin holder
  • Drawers to store sewing accessories and supplies
  • Easy access to electrical outlets
  • A comfortable chair with a back cushion if needed

The Most Important Components of a Sewing Space

The three most important components of your sewing space are a decent sewing machine, a comfy chair and a proper sewing machine table. The rest of the stuff can be arranged as time and space permits.

Of course, if you do have a whole room then you can expand with a larger sewing machine table or a sewing machine cabinet. Bookshelves make excellent storage for fabric and you’ll have room to stock up – always having fabric at hand to start a new project whenever you want. Hang a large thread caddy on the wall like Marie and have an array of colors to work with.

Keep one wall area blank to use as a design wall, especially when putting together a quilt. (The ability to step back from your work and look at it critically is helpful). Add a chest of drawers for supplies and an ironing board and you’ve got yourself a top notch sewing room.

That's it Heather...if you have at least a basic set up somewhere - you can just jump in and start sewing!

You're right! Having an organised sewing space is so important and I like that you remembered to mention the power outlet! I don't have my own sewing room yet either and I like to encourage people to make room somewhere anyway and just do it. It's easy to lose motivation for this hobby if it's got to be regularly packed away in a closet!
