Are you looking for something to do with a pair of old jeans? Something fun, crafty and useful? How about making a tote bag out of them? A tote bag is a very practical thing and re-purposing your old jeans will keep them out of the landfill!

First, let's make sure you have the best pair of old jeans for this project. How big do you want your bag to be? What will you be carrying in it? Choose old jeans with a waistband big enough to suit your need. How deep do you want your bag to be? The pant legs will need to be cut off completely. If you are using old low-rise jeans your bag will be very shallow. If you want to create a deeper bag, choose high-waisted jeans or men's jeans.

Will you be carrying school books or snacks? Make up or a child's small toys? Will you use your new creation as a grocery bag or a diaper bag? Take measurements and plan carefully so that your end result will be the one you expect!

There are many ways to create tote bags out of old jeans. You can take the simple, straight forward approach or you can create an intricate project with lots of detail. The sky's the limit! Below, you will find directions for a simple, no-sew tote bag made from old jeans. Remember, this is art, not science. Feel free to alter the directions. As long as you are satisfied with your end result you've done it right.

No-sew tote bag

  • Gather your materials: Old jeans, scissors, glue gun and glue sticks or your fabric glue of choice.
  • Cut off the legs. Be careful to cut straight across. When you finish cutting you should have created a tube shape.
  • Turn the "tube" inside-out so the pockets are on the inside. To create the bottom of the bag, glue the opening you created, closed. Let the glue dry.
  • Create the handles. To create handles for a tote bag cut 2 strips from a pant leg, about 12 to 14 inches long and 3 or 4 inches wide. Fold each strip in thirds, lengthwise, and glue the edges down. Let the glue dry.
  • Attach the handles to the front and back insides of the bag with glue. Match up the lower edges of each strap with the lower edge of the waistband.
  • Add your own style with embellishments and you're done!

What else can you do with old jeans? With a little thought and creativity you can discover how to create anything from bracelets to paper with your old jeans. Have fun!
