Using Color Choices To Make Projects Distinctive – Part One: General Principles

I come from a family of knitters and crocheters. Most of the female members of the household I grew up in, which included a live-in grandmother, either knitted or crocheted at least at times and some had skills in both crafts.

One of the things that all of my family members had in common was that with rare exceptions, the knitter or crocheter chose a pattern color other than the color shown in the illustration accompanying the pattern.

There are a variety of different ways to go about making color selections. However, there are certain general principles you want to follow for best effect in making your selections.

One thing you definitely want to avoid is too much “busyness” in your yarn and pattern combination. While variegated yarn makes a lovely choice, you want to avoid variegated yarns in certain instances. Variegated yarn works well for crocheted patterns up to the pattern complexity of the shell and cluster patterns. However, once you get into things like popcorn stitches and that similar pattern intricacies, either the variegated yarn or the intricacy of the pattern will get undermined from this combination. In knitted patterns, you want to avoid variegated yarns with lacy patterns and in most cases with patterns like a cable knit. You may find certain exceptions to this rule. For example, I knit several fisherman knit sweaters over about a five year interval. All but one were in solid colors. The exception was in a very soft, variegated yarn in a pale yellow and white blend for my sister-in-law whose favorite color was yellow. That worked very nicely, whereas that pattern would not have worked well with a variegated yarn any darker than that pale pastel shade.

As another color strategy consider a dramatic variation to the original depiction. Referring to those same fisherman knit sweaters, the pattern showed the sweater in walnut, and I indeed made one person a sweater in that color. However, for another friend I made a dramatic departure from the pattern illustration of a burgundy red color. In this case, we were shopping together and I pretended I was looking for yarn for a sweater for someone else and got her to actually show me the color she would like a sweater in. So, if you know a preferred color, do not be afraid to make a bold departure from the original pattern color.

Another color strategy involves finding a yarn color that somehow associates with the person you are making the knitted or crocheted item for. You can find a variety of ways to match up a person with a color or a combination set of colors. You can find pattern books and online sources that give you the designation of colors associated with personal traits, for example. One such chart suggests such meanings as blue representing stability, trust, loyalty, faith, truth and tranquility; and gold representing illumination and wisdom as examples. Other similar color charts give information on yarn colors that might relate to birthstones. You might even choose a color that associates well with the person’s occupation. For example, you could choose a medium-to-dark shade of blue to go with a postal employee’s uniform or a charcoal gray for a sweater or scarf for a clergyperson. For a teacher, you might make a crochet or knit project using yarn that represents the school colors of the school where the person teaches. Or, if you know it, simply the recipient’s favorite color.

As always, ensure that you do not mix fibers. If you use wool for the main color, do not combine that with an acrylic yarn for the trim. Also, if you use dye lot yarn ensure that you have enough of that dye lot for the portion of the peice that uses that color.

Well-considered yarn color choices can help give the knitted and crocheted projects you make that distinctive, special touch.
