Using Yarn Colors To Make Projects Distinctive – Part Two, Baby Items

With baby patterns there is a practical reason for making a different color choice than that shown in the pattern illustrations. Many patterns show baby items in either blue or pink, associated with either a boy or a girl baby. Since baby items are typically made ahead and back in those days people didn’t know until the birth the gender of the child, our family tended to avoid solid blue or pink in baby patterns.

Today, with ultrasound, many families do know the gender in advance. However, some do not share that information with people outside the family. Even if they do, since others who do not craft and buy store-bought garments or blankets for the baby may stick with blue and pink so that the family ends up with a preponderance of items in those colors, a different color choice can make a nice change in the overall layette once the baby arrives.

Here are some alternative color selections for baby items such as sweaters, bonnets, blankets, and booties that you might consider.

Mint green. This yarn color is usually available in both fingering and sport weight yarn. It goes well with many other colors, including pink, although some would say it does clash with blue should the child be a boy baby. I personally like green matched with blue, provided the shades are in the same what I’ll call “depth” range. That is, a dark blue with a dark green or a pastel blue with a pastel green. In our family, mint green was a popular choice for crocheting or knitting baby items.

Lavender/lilac. This pale shade of purple makes a lovely choice for baby items. The “matching” description here is much the same as with mint green. I like it with both pink and blue, though some would object to lavender with blue. This color used to be harder to find in baby and sport weight yarns, but in recent trips to the craft stores I’ve seen it available most of the time.

Light yellow. This is another lovely choice for a different color for a baby. The “matching” designations for this color are the reverse: yellow goes beautifully with blue but perhaps not as well with pink although I have seen that color combination work well with pink when well thought out.

Peach. This light shade of orange makes a very nice choice for a knit or crocheted project for a special baby partly because while peach tone yarns in fingering and sport weight yarn have ready availability, relatively speaking this is a fairly uncommon choice among knitters or crocheters for baby projects.

Variegated yarns. If anyone in my family did indeed use pink or blue in a baby project, in would be in some kind of a blend. You can potentially find a variety of different variegated blends in fingering and sport weight yarns, although the two most common are a pink-blue-white combination, a mint-yellow-white combination, and a combination with white plus the other four colors of the separate blends: blue, pink, yellow and mint.

Create your own blend. Some patterns, such as a crochet ripple sweater, give you the chance to create your own blend of these or other colors available in the weight of yarn your baby pattern calls for.

Birthstone colors. If you are knitting or crocheting a baby item, or set of items, after the child’s birth, you might choose a yarn color associated with the birthstone of the month of the child’s birthday. You can find pattern books with this kind of information included. For example, for July, with a Ruby birthstone, you might chose a bright red yarn for a baby item. For December, with a turquoise birthstone, you might choose turquoise or aqua yarn.

If you know, or you can find out, the theme of the nursery décor, you can also choose a pattern color that picks up on one of the colors in that décor: which may or may not be the same as some of the examples already described. However, since many baby garments or blankets will be worn when the family takes the baby out in public, this should not be a matter of excessive concern if you have no idea what the nursery looks like.

These are just some examples of how you can make your project unusual and special simply by putting some thought into your color selections as you prepare for knitting or crocheting a baby item or set of items.
