Cross Stitch Charts

The two types of cross stitch - stamped cross stitch and counted cross stitch - are worked differently. Counted cross stitch uses a design that is worked from a chart while the design is printed on the fabric with stamped cross stitch. The specific skill involved with reading the cross stitch chart and then converting it on to the fabric is a simple one to be proficient at and, once it is understood, will bring about many exciting possibilities. After mastering this technique, you will be able to understand any counted cross stitch chart and you will also find it easy to adjust, increase, reduce and eventually create your own designs simply and adeptly.

Some tips to making cross stitch charts easier to read are included in this article for your reference.

By highlighting the area you are currently working, the chart will be able to be read easier. This can be very helpful, especially on a large sized chart. There are a variety of methods cross stitchers use do this.

  • Laminate your chart. Once laminated, you can use a texta or marker pen on the chart to highlight the squares of the colour you are going to stitch. Using a laminated chart is advantageous because the marks can be wiped off once you have completed the cross stitch design.
  • Mark the chart once stitches are completed. You can mark the chart as you finish the stitches. Note that you should use use different colours if sections have already been highlighted. Take care not to get marker pen ink on the fabric though.
  • Attaching magnetic strips. You can use magnetic strips around the area of the chart that you are working on at the moment. You will need to move these strips as you progress with the project. This is very helpful as it allows you to focus on the correct section of the chart, as you move your eyes back and forth from the chart to the fabric. A metal board, which is readily available, is required so that the magnets can grip the chart. You can even try mounting these magnetic boards on a stand or clamp as they ideal for holding your chart in position so that it can be easily read.
  • Using sticky notes. You may even like to use self-adhesive post-it notes which can be stuck lightly to the chart and moved around as you work.

Checking your work regularly is an essential part of any cross stitch project. It is not a good feeling when you realise that you have put several stitches in the wrong place and so the design is not correct. To reduce the need to unpick any cross stitch thread, you should continually check your work. You need to count carefully from the cross stitch chart and not just the stitches already on the fabric, which you may have assumed (incorrectly) to be in the right place. Taking time as you are working can save a lot of disappointment later.
