Research is an inseparable part of writing. The research helps to prove your point of view to your audience. Therefore, you need to know the types of research methodologies.
There are two methods of researching qualitative and quantitative. You can use one at a time or you can use both of them; however, it depends on the level of research and your subject.
Qualitative research
Through qualitative research you collect, analyze and interpret information by observing people’s behavior. Thus, qualitative research focuses on definitions, concepts, meanings, characteristics, descriptions, metaphors and symbols of things while quantitative research focuses on counting and measuring things. Quantitative research is less subjective and for collecting information, it uses dissimilar methods such as focus groups and in-depth interviews, while qualitative research is highly subjective.
Quantitative Research
However, in this research methodology a large number of participants take part. Moreover, according to definition only statistically valid, objective and quantitative measurement is acceptable. Obviously, it surrounds numbers and hard data objectives. Statistical formulae are used to ascertain the quantity of sample data.
Qualitative Method
• Less simplified
• Time consumption heavier on the analysis phase and lighter on the planning phase
• Because it depends on rigor and skill of the researcher; therefore, they can be reliable and valid
• Does not require statistical tests
• Semi-structured or unstructured options of response
• Provide extensive information on a few cases
• It is text based
• As it defines a condition or problem from the perspective of those experiencing it, it is more subjective
• To formulate hypotheses or theory it uses primarily inductive process
• For types of themes reviews documents, conducts interviews inclusive of focus groups
Quantitative Method
• More simplified
• Time consumption lighter on the analysis phase and heavier on the planning phase
• As it mostly depends on the measurement instruments and devices, it can be reliable and valid
• Requires statistical testing
• Requires fixed response options
• Though not extensive and in-depth but provides more information with large number of cases
• It is number-based
• As it defines observational perspective of the researcher or of a program on a condition or a problem, it is more objective
• Generally, it uses deductive process to test hypotheses, construct and pre-specified concepts that develop a theory
• For numeric information, documents, reviews of records, observations, structured interviews and surveys are used
It is highly advisable that you learn and understand them because if you continue your study, you would definitely need them in future. Law Assignment Help
