Black Gold

Whoever thought in half a century I would stand in the crowd stripped of all I ever had?

Whoever thought that the lips that sound victory songs would curse the day the news was told?

My children’s faces were lit with joy and relief as the friend declared the news

They were happier than my children

They knew their thoughts

They knew what they had found

They had found gold

Colored black yet worth searching for

The dreams were set high

The goals were set beyond what seemed achievable

Yet we didn’t care

For we knew the worth of gold and what it could do

We dreamed of a city without darkness

A city with highly educated people was the dream

The city would rid itself of hunger and poverty once and for all

In what seemed a blink of an eye the vessels were at my shores

People who spoke strange languages were at my shore

They were seen knowledgeable and capable of training

Great mansions were seen on my waters overnight

In haste the forests were cleared

In a hurry the pipes were laid

People from my neighboring villages and towns came

They came to listen to my story of fortune

Some left with envy in their hearts yet smiling

Others left to tell the news to those who couldn’t come

I was made known to the world overnight

It’s been a golden jubilee now

Now is the time to account for the gold

I look at my streets and yet I see deeper drenches

Than what was around half a century ago

More than half my children still cannot compete with the literate

They look skinnier than without my gold

The lands are cleared yet they are bare

They walk along the coasts with bare hands

The coasts that always gave each one

A handful of fish is now dead

The fishes lay breathless for drinking gold

The birds flew in the air without landing on my shores

They are scared my gold would make them ugly

Yet they seek golden jewels

How come the one dressed in gold let his children sleep hungry?

How does the money owner go burrowing?

Whom can the known rich tell he is poor?

Who will believe my wish?

My wish that the black gold was never found.
