Adults Need To Play

When you think of playing, what comes to mind? Do you conjure up images of children playing in sandboxes or little girls playing with Barbie dolls? Children do indeed play. They play dolls, they play house, and they play outside. They draw a hopscotch board on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk and then play hopscotch with friends or chase a butterfly and try to catch it. When children play, they learn valuable skills, such as problem-solving. Like children, adults also play, but they play differently.

While children play with toys, adults play by engaging in various hobbies that they enjoy. They might listen to a favorite radio show, such as "American Top 40" or "The John Tesh Radio Show", for example. They might play a computer game. They might also go to a bar or comedy club with friends. It is important for adults to play. Why?

One reason why adults need to play is to boost their creativity. If an adult is a blogger or an artist, for example, creativity is very important. Creativity is what helps him to do new work. If he sits at a desk all day long, it can be very difficult to be creative. He can sit at his desk with a notebook beside him, ready to jot down any great ideas that he gets. If the ideas never come, however, he is no closer to his goal than he was that morning when he woke up. If he steps away from his desk briefly, he can get many ideas to inspire new work. An artist may see a field of flowers, a person rollerblading, or a beautiful sunset, for example, which can inspire ideas for art in the form of photography, painting, or drawing. A blogger may go to the mall and see many tanned shoppers. He may then get an idea for an article about why people should not use tanning beds. Creativity is not the only reason why adults need to play, however.

Another reason why it is important for them to play is so that they can learn to manage their time. A college student may have a paper to write, for example. It is a five-page paper that will require research and MLA documentation. The student has been thinking about a new comedy that has just opened at the theatre, however. It stars several of his favorite actors, and he really wants to see it. The student might use the movie as a motivator. He might think to himself, "If I can get this paper done in an hour, I can go see the matinee." This thinking will help him to get his paper finished in a timely manner, rather than putting it off until the last minute. With the paper out of his way, he will then be able to relax and focus on other goals. He will also be able to treat himself to a movie and know that his work will not be waiting for him when he gets home.

Keep in mind, however, that it is important not to rush through your work so that you can get to the playing. If you rush, you will likely make mistakes. The mistakes can result in low grades, a cut in pay, or life-threatening situations, like a house fire.

Do your work, and pay attention to detail. If you are a student, paying attention to detail means checking to make sure that a research paper is properly formatted for the class that you are taking. If you are taking an English class, for example, you will need to format it for MLA, or Modern Language Association, style. It also means checking carefully for errors in spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Once your paper has been thoroughly checked for errors and at last turned in, then you can play. Clear your head, have some fun, and play to your heart's content.
