Have You Heard Of Art Therapy?

When I was younger and still to this day I suffer Anxiety and Depression. My Mother suffers from it also and we have seen many Doctors, Psychologists and Psychiatrists. All these Doctors would mostly prescribe different medication each time. None of these I felt comfortable taking or the side effects out weighed the positive effects. I was afraid to take any medication for it, as I was confident to cure it myself. 'Stress is the most unhealthy thing to do to your body' I was told many times.

After trying different jobs, none of which I felt were the right option, I landed a job in Hospitality and was extremely happy at the age of seventeen. The boss was very happy with me and my dedication towards my job. This led him to offer me a two year traineeship. Happy as could be, I was learning Reception work in the morning, Bar, Bottleshop and Restaurant work during the day. Originally put on for forty-five hours a week, I was wearing myself out completely each day and ignoring having a social life or friends. After six months I had to ask the boss to cut my hours down to forty. Anxiety was increasing and getting in the way.

Returning back to my Psychologist I slowly worked through the end of my first year in confidence to soon have my Certificate three in Hospitality. The end of the first year came and I had a breakdown. I felt useless, helpless and in fear of the world. Taking a bit of time off work I could not stop drawing tiny little patterns and filling an A4 page with doodling. My next idea was to go down and buy paint. I could not stop drawing and painting. Mum was thrilled to get into the drawing and painting with me!

Art had always been an interest in my life and something I've enjoyed, but due to work I had ignored my creative side for quite some time. I told my Psychologist of my sudden urge to draw and paint such odd pictures as I had never created such bizarre styles before. She told me I had discovered Art Therapy. I was told to bring them in for my Pyschologist to look at but in fear of her locking me up in a padded cell with a straight jacket for drawing such insane patterns... I didn't.

I truly believe Art Therapy can do amazing things and help with reducing stress levels. We all have something were interested in and makes us happy, showing people doesn't always have to happen, its the relief of feeling focused on something you enjoy. It was a Therapy process to help my Anxiety settle and see what I could express on paper. Art Therapy is used for children and also adults. Next time you feel stressed, go reach for a pencil, pen, paintbrush or whatever your choice, and doodle away! I believe it helped me a great deal and I am glad to have discovered it!
