To begin with.

Cricket is a game of two sides each with 11 players. It is a bat and ball game played on a large oval shaped field with a wicket in the middle. The wicket is a rectangular 22 yard long pitch (20.12 m) by 302 cm. It is a flat surface with a very short covering of grass which wears away as the game moves forward.

One team will bat while the other team fields and tries to bowl the other team out. There are two batters at the crease at any one time at each end using a Cricket bat to defend his wicket which is represented as 3 stumps and 2 bails at each end of the wicket pitch placed in line with each other down the middle line.

A stump is a thinish straight piece of wood about 28 in long that has a point at one end that is pushed into the ground, the distance between stumps being slightly smaller than the circumference of the ball with the middle stump in the middle, the off stump and leg stump depending on whether the batsman is left or right handed. The bails rest on the top of the 3 stumps and if these are dislodged while the ball is either in play (being bowled) or the batsman is caught out of his crease while the ball is still "in play" but after being bowled then the batsman loses his wicket and is out

The ball itself is a hard ball made form cork and surrounded by leather sewn around with a prominent seam. The 2 most popular types of Cricket balls are the Dukes Cricket ball manufactured in the UK and the Kookaburra Cricket ball from Australia.

The Cricket bat used by the batsman is traditionally made from wood, usually English Willow, and is no more than 38 in long and 4.25 in wide. Cricket equipment is regulated by the ICC to create uniformity and fairness in the game.

The object of the batting side is to score as many runs as possible before losing all of their wickets. Runs are scored by the batter hitting the ball after its bowled, to a space on the outfield which the fielding side must then regain control of. The batters run to alternate ends of the wicket pitch, before the fielding side can regain control of the ball and try to catch either of the batters out of their crease. The amount of runs ran will depend on where the batter hit the ball on the outfield and how long it takes the fielding side to retrieve it. A four can be scored by the batter who strikes the ball into the outfield and to the boundary, if the ball reaches the boundary without touching the ground then a 6 is scored, adding 6 runs to the batters total. This is the highest amount a batter can score from one bowled ball.

When bowling, the bowler will bowl 6 balls to an over in an overhand manner taking a run up. There are different types of bowlers such as swing bowlers, who will swerve the ball by 1 or 2 cm in the air as the ball is traveling toward the batsman, resulting in an edge and the batsman being caught behind. Or pace and seam bowlers who will swing the ball slightly but bowl upwards of 90+ mph hoping to create movement off the seam of the ball hitting the ground. There are also spin bowlers who bowl at a very slow pace compared to pace or swing bowlers, they will spin the ball to create variation in movement off the spin of the ball as it hits the ground.

There are different formats of the game each dictate how many overs are bowled, these are 20/Twenty (twenty overs a side); O.D.I's (one day international consisting of 50 overs a side) and Test Matches which cover 5 days and usually involve 2 innings each with an average of 90 overs a day being bowled.

A Test Match day is broken up into 3 parts, the morning session which ends at lunch, the afternoon session, then tea followed by the final session. Test matches can sway like a pendulum from one side to the other depending on who wins each session impacting who will likely win the game.
