Atlanta, The Hub

Human sex trafficking is something that we are beginning to hear more and more about. It’s a woman’s worst nightmare. To be made into a sex slave is just hard to even think about. In recent years, i’ve seen several movies about this topic. Innocent girls would go to these foreign countries and end up becoming a victim in the human sex trade. They would literally just vanish. Sometimes these girls would escape and make it back to their homes, while some of these girls perished. I don’t know how deep and raw this world is. I’ve been blessed to never fall as prey to it. However, the world of sex in general is very deep and in-depth. It is a world of many layers. Some beautiful, while others are rather grotesques.

Atlanta is a sexually liberated city. I have felt and closely watched the growth of this city for a couple of decades now. I remember when Atlanta, was only the capital of Georgia, it was a very small and developing city that possessed so much potential. I would have never guessed in a million years that Atlanta would have evolved and became what it is today. Nothing is too odd on the streets of this city. Sex or sexual orientation is not an issue. Everyone is copesthetic for the most part.

Studies say that Atlanta is the number one hub for human sex trafficking and Juvenile sexual exploitation. When I first read the stats, I couldn’t believe it. I pondered on this for a while until it hit me. Atlanta is home to the busiest airport in the world: Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International. Hartsfield is also one of the largest airports in the world. A lot of international travelers arrive and depart from Atlanta all the time and more foreigners are making this city their new home. Atlanta is “Baby Hollywood”, with that being said, everybody wants in. Everyone wants to be seen and everyone wants to be a star. Acting on those desires the wrong way can definitely get you caught up in a bad situation.

There was a lot of prostitution going on really heavy in the 90’s. It caused such an issue that a lot of the streets have been renamed in hopes to dispel of their bad reputations. Metropolitan Parkway, formerly known as Stewart Avenue, is actually Atlanta’s old blue light district. All kinds of major activity used to go down on that side of town. Today, Metropolitan isn’t nearly as bad as it used to be but there is still so much work to do. I often see a few “night walkers” and “stroller” walking down Metropolitan at night. I never pay them much attention. When I reflect back on all of the times that I have seen them, I question now, “How many children and women are being force to do this either out of fear or circumstance?

Since I was young, I was always told that the business of sex would never go bankrupt. It is so true. Women and children end up becoming victims in the sex trade for various reasons. It is stated that 100 adolescent girls are exploited every night in Georgia. One child being exploited is one too many.
