Criminals all around New York are celebrating the treasure map printed in The Journal News of all gun owners in several areas. What was the reporter thinking when he decided to write this article? Local citizens are up in arms over this invasion of their privacy, even though the information was obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. This is a very troubling article on many levels.
First, this reporter has now listed who has guns for protection and who doesn't. Criminals can now feel free to plan heists of any number of properties and have no fear of being shot by the home owner. While it is sad that he left so many people open to being burglarized, the reporter never gave much thought to elderly citizens who could be potential victims and even killed by these intruders.
Another point to consider is who else has been exposed that should not have been? Retired police officers, FBI agents, undercover officers, and a number of other people who would not want to be listed in the local newspaper as owning guns. The Journal News' reporter did not give any consideration for the safety of anyone before publishing his story.
This article is one that would definitely make every person who wants to see all guns banned very happy. The article stated to look at your neighbors and see who has guns in your neighborhood. I know that I would personally be a bit upset if my hometown newspaper decided to list everyone who owned guns in our county. It certainly would put some people on the spot, if they professed to be against guns and were found to own several different weapons.
Whatever this reporter's reason truly was for writing this article, he certainly stirred up a hornets' nest. I seriously doubt this article will stop the senseless killing by insane and mentally-impaired gunmen hell-bent on mass murder. Banning of all assault weapons would be the best method and also the clips that hold hundreds of rounds of ammo. This alone will not stop these acts of violence, but it can slow them down.
It is time that people look at the main-streaming of people in schools that are suffering from mental health issues and other behavior problems. When you push the envelope too far, you can have frightening consequences. The quiet boy, the loner with no friends can turn out to be the next school shooter. Officials need to really look at this issue and make the necessary changes to safeguard innocent people by keeping those individuals out of the main stream until their problems have been solved or completely corrected.
Journal News ONLY defense is that (its readers "are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn.) translation, something to sell this rag. The state enacted a gun control law that included privacy provisions for permit holders - they (Journal News) took down the map in 3 days. Just because you have access to information doesn't mean you publish it. Poor judgement and poor journalism.
If you were to ban Guns, Knives, Sharp Objects, Bombs, and anything else someone would or could use, You Can Not (BAN EVIL) !!! Bob
Very, very true! Someone would devise a way to kill a large number of people if they had to burn the building down! Evil and mentally ill and other psychological problems are main streamed in our schools. Those who are affected with illnesses and on medications do not always take the meds or they "self-medicate" and it does little or no good for them. Schools had a decent idea about main-streaming those with disabilities, but, they failed to look at the end results when those little kids grew up and went into high school and in some cases, middle school. Kids can and will be cruel to each other. It is a fact of life. Problem being, when they mistreat someone with mental illness or impairments, etc. they can trigger many violent outbursts which could result in someone's death. This issue needs to be rethought and safe-guards need to be factored in, or scrap the whole main-streaming process, period. Classrooms are disrupted on a regular basis by those who have medical and/or mental issues. Is it fair to the students without these issues to be distracted by these outbursts? I don't think so. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease....this seems to be the problem with main-streaming seriously ill students.
