Fatal Shooting By Fellow Officer: Action Raises Justice Issues

The Santa Maria, CA Police Department 'suffered' a loss from the fatal shooting of one of its own police officers by an officer from the same department. The wounded officer made it to the hospital before succumbing to his single gunshot wound yesterday, Saturday, January 29, 2012. The action could have been avoided if the victim did not open fire to begin with. The Officer returning fire should be praised for not "unloading" his weapon as in most cases with a suspect of despicable crimes who attack by gunfire, adding to the 'rage' in eliminating the threat.

The slain police officer was on duty when he reportedly drew his weapon and got rounds off, and then, was shot by a single bullet by the officer closest to the trajectory of the gunfire. The attacker was under investigation for charges of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Too Easy

With the officer only being shot once, it may send the message of "exacting" what the Justice system would take a few years to accomplish; putting the officer out of his fellow officers' miseries. There's nothing worse than knowing a child was affected for life, but being so close that fellow officers may even know the victim through children of their own is unbearable to most, but comes with the difficult duty our brave men and women in uniform accomplish everyday. So, he got off too easy with no sustainable penalties for his actions, much like the young victim may endure from now on. Those types of crimes are lifelong to the victims because of the early age.

An unrelated incident where police cornered a perpetrator who killed one of their officers, after many hours of searching, had no chance of escape. When the perp. fired; he was shot at a total of 68 times with 35+ bullet holes in his rattled body.

Justice Will Prevail

These two incidents have to do with the loss of fellow officers, but the route each took is different so it is safe to presume - first thing's first - don't fire at police!! Abide by the law to begin with, but understand what misconduct does to others and especially the victims and surrounding family, colleagues, and friends because it can lead them to do things otherwise being innocent of.

Right now there are multiple families affected by this tragedy, but it could have been worse if not for the brave officers to move forward with investigating their own kind for criminal conduct. Justice has prevailed and the message is clear for this type of crime, with a slain police officer as proof.

Street Talk

When I say "Justice has Prevailed" in relation to the article, I'm not siding with killing the officer, and more explanation would have sufficed to relate that officer victim was already on the Justice -prevailing path being under investigation and surrounded by armed personnel, and.. there are very few outcomes to gunfights. So my intention was more in relief that the girl was out of danger and no other people could be victimized by him. and although his actions caused permanent damage, I find this is the part where "founding-father" religious views shaped the laws that dictated what the officers did that day. I should have also related that many points of views also cause a measured/reduced amount of acceptable outcomes - life or death, prison or death penalty. But at the core of it all is actually how the "Justice' is interpreted - I look at justice being served for the girl never having to experience that again, others would focus on if it was justified for shooting the officer, but it was not his appropriate "Justice" or punishment. I could sum it up with saying it is labeled Justice because it's supposed to be more refined than just mere punishment; it is a core set of principles that ensure actions of the legal system can be held to the high standard of exacting Justice, because without the standards simple eye for an eye punishment would likely result and the innocent until proven guilty standard would soon vanish...and, fast forward to 250 million registered gun owners(# of current US gun owners) with "eye for an eye" mentalities. It's a good thing that our founding fathers implemented the government into three sections that could not eliminate the other or team up to monopolize - we could improve, but Americans should be proud we've kept the Constitution at the center of our policies. What do you think? Any deep-seated thoughts on this subject matter??
