George Zimmerman Faces Charges, Pleads Not Guilty In Court

Charges have finally been brought against George Zimmerman, the self appointed neighborhood watch member who shot and killed unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin in the final week of February. Since the night of Trayvon's death a number of protests and marches have taken place, demanding to know why Zimmerman was released without charges. Zimmerman claimed the Florida law, Stand Your Ground protected him from any prosecution.

Angela Corey, was made the special prosecutor in the case after a number of questions about how it was handled from that night. Corey will be seeking questions about why Trayvon's body was held for three days before his parents were notified, why he was the only one that was tested for drugs and alcohol while Zimmerman was not and why the police did not interview Martin's girlfriend who was on the phone with him in the moments leading up to the shooting. Zimmerman claims that Trayvon ran at first and then burst out of a hiding place to attack him, breaking his nose and bashing his head into the ground repeatedly. Zimmerman's attorneys had planned to use that attack as a defense - likening the injuries to those similar to Shaken Baby Syndrome. Just days before Zimmerman was charged and brought into custody, the attorneys on the case announced that they were no longer representing the man.

According to the legal team, Zimmerman was not listening to legal advice and was trying to do things on his own. Zimmerman's father and the two attorneys had tried to set up a web site for his legal defense but found that he had already set another up on his own. In addition, they learned that George Zimmerman had approached a member of the media, asking to speak off the record. He also tried to set up a meeting with Angela Corey's office to discuss his case. That meeting was denied with the prosecutor saying that there would be no meeting without legal representation.

Zimmerman was brought into custody but his location was kept secret because of a number of safety concerns. That location is in the state of Florida.

Corey, who had announced that there would not be a grand jury convened in the case, decided to charge Zimmerman with Second Degree Murder which means that she will have to prove that the shooting included some degree of malice. Her other option was to charge him with manslaughter which did not require any proof of his mental state when the shooting happened.
