George Zimmerman Verdict

On July 13, 2013 George Zimmerman who was on trial for the killing of a teenager named Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012 was found not-guilty by a jury of 6 women. Since the verdict there has been outrage by many American claiming justice was not rendered in this particular case. It appears there was enough evidence that proved reasonable doubt and enough that led to this final verdict which found him not-guilty of second degree murder.

This case from the beginning was under major scrutiny due to Mr. Martin being unarmed at the time of the incidence, police conduct, and the very intense media coverage. Therefore, it led to allegations of racist motivation which in turn caused public demand for Mr. Zimmerman's arrest from the start.

However, are we not a country that preaches that all men are presumed innocent until proven guilty? If we are then it does not appear that Mr. Zimmerman received a fair shake in this instance.

The real question here is whether or not Mr. Zimmerman felt that his life was in danger and felt there was no other option at the time of the incidence. I don't believe that race played a role in this at all and I definitely don't believe that Trayvon was targeted because of the color of his skin.

It would appear that this is not the verdict that Trayvons' parents wanted or most of the nation however, it was determined by the jurors in a court of law. This is expected when there is such a strong conviction amongst the masses.

The verdict caused such anger among citizens that within hours of the verdict a petition was set into motion that had well over 225,000 signatures. It was mentioned that by noon on July, 14, 2013 it had well over 350,000 signatures with many more expected. This petition is obviously an attempt to overturn a decision that has already been rendered by the courts. Are we as a country saying that our justice system is inadequate?

What is so ironic about this is, that every year there are people who are sentenced to prison for crimes they did not commit and those not convicted due to inadequate evidence. Where is the citizen outrage for those people involved? I personally think the media plays a big part in how crimes are presented and then perceived by the public.

It appears that the citizens of the Untied States of America are passing judgment on Mr. Zimmerman without knowing why he chose to make the decisions he did.. Furthermore, we should not judge someone unless we have walked a day in their shoes as we were not there to witness the incident in question.

We have rights as citizens of the United States of America to protect ourselves if we are in danger or feel that harm is immanent. However, we must consider each situation that we encounter as most people are not cold blooded killers.

The truth is this was a tragedy and unfortunately a young teenage man lost his life and will forever be missed by his family and friends. The moral of this tragedy is that we must consider the choices we make in certain situations because once it's made there is no turning back the hands of time.
