The trial lasted thirty three days, the case much longer than that. The jury took just over ten hours once they were given the case to come back with what may have been one of the most shocking verdicts ever. Casey Anthony, long believed by many to be guilty of killing her two year old daughter, Caylee, was found not guilty of all of the felony charges that the state had brought against her. She was found guilty of all four misdemeanor charges related to providing false information to a police officer. Sentencing on those charges will happen on Thursday, according to Judge Belvin Perry.
The defense team did concede that Casey lied, frequently and that she did not act like others would if their own child was lost. When addressing the media after the verdict was read, lead defense attorney Jose Baez said that there was really no winner in this case. The jurors all declined to speak to the media at this time.
The case has long been hampered by a lack of a conclusive cause of death as well as conflicting expert testimony from both sides. The prosecution did not manage to link Casey to her daughter’s remains nor did they manage to fully paint the young woman as anything but a young and sometimes irresponsible mother. Casey Anthony could face up to one year of prison time for each of her crimes which means that with time served, could technically serve less than a year more in prison.
Meanwhile, Cindy and George Anthony were the first people to leave the court room after the verdict was read, flanked by their attorney, Mark Lippman. Lippman would later report to the media that the Anthonys are in hiding after receiving several death threats.
Additional questions have arisen after the verdict, namely that of what will happen next in this twisting and turning case. Some legal experts are predicting that George Anthony may be the next to go to trial in this case, if the state can manage to garner enough evidence to get a case against him to go that far. It is also unclear whether there will ever be a perjury charge filed against Cindy Anthony.
The family will still be dealing with a defamation lawsuit, filed by a woman named Zenaida Gonzales. Zenaida, also called “Zanny the Nanny” was the name Casey Anthony gave to explain where Caylee was for over a month before she finally admitted that Zenaida did not exist, at least, not one that she knew or had dealings with. Casey contended that Zanny had taken Caylee because she was not being a “good mother” and to teach her a lesson. One story had her giving Caylee willingly while another had Casey being knocked to the ground and Caylee wrenched from her. The real Zenaida Gonzales who was questioned by police several times, filed the lawsuit against the Anthony family.
A case where the police probably did not provide enough evidence for the prosecution, and they could not prove their case.
I'm confused. It says this article was posted on Sep. 18 but there are comments here from last year. ??????
Oh. Didn't know we could do that. Learn somethin' new every day :)
She had rotten decay in the back of her trunk, she partied, she put tattoos on herself, and the prosecutors had 400 pieces of evidence and still lost. Towards the end her parents "quickly" left the courtroom without saying anything to her and simply said to a reporter that the court evaluated the evidence to the best of there ability and came to a fair verdict. Pretty crazy stuff if you ask me. They've started some petition for Caylee if you want to check it out. It's called Create Caylee's Law - Sign the Petition!
Yeah, it really is a no brainer. Our court systems are not for justice apparently though... they can't use judgement or intuition in the case, they need DNA these days. If you line up the evidence, what happened is clear. Now Casey is going to become a millionaire through book deals and might even get a job next to Nancy Grace on CNN with all the JUNK news they have been putting on there lately.
I guess this is truly a case of circumstantial evidence...which makes the courts systems the fair process. There are many people out there that are in jail because of circumstantial evidence when they actually did not commit the crime. Glad this case is over, maybe the public can get back to caring about REAL news.
