My Beer Made Me Do It: The Utter Lunacy Of An Inmate Based Lawsuit Against the Liquor Industry

Let's file this one under things that will make you shake your head. Five men, all charged with a range of crimes are serving time in the Idaho State Correctional Institution. These five should by all rights be charged with a serious crime- the murder of good sense and personal responsibility for their lawsuit they have just recently filed. That suit is seeking one billion dollars from various companies in the liquor industry alleging that alcohol is the reason that the men committed the crimes that have landed them in this spot in the first place.

The suit was initially filed by Keith Allan Brown, a fifty two year old man who pled guilty to to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in 2010. According to Brown's suit, he has spent an accumulated thirty years or so in the prison system for a variety of crimes the majority of which stemming from his alcohol use. Brown contends that he did not know of the addictive qualities of alcohol when he first started drinking in his younger years. Brown is joined in this billion dollar lawsuit by several other men including Jeremy Joseph Brown, Steven J. Thompson, Woodrow J. Grant and Cory A. Baugh.

Keith A. Brown is serving time for the shooting death of a man while Jeremy Brown is incarcerated for a shooting that left his victim seriously injured. The three remaining plaintiffs are all facing various drug and other charges but all claim the same thing: they just did not know that alcohol was habit forming and had they known when they started, they might have avoided it. Personal responsibility advocates are gasping in disbelief at the lawsuit and its audacity.

Most of the men made the same comments, that they had started drinking when they were "young" or when they were "boys" which implies that they may have started drinking before they were twenty one, the legal drinking age. Of course, that means that they were already breaking the law but that is also the fault of the liquor industry for making their products so darn palatable and irresistible to the youth of the world. Does that mean that every kid who steals a six pack out of his dad's fridge is just seconds away from a serious crime spree? Of course it does not. What it means is that these five adult men are all in prison, all for crimes they committed and they are looking for an excuse for their behavior. Quick: show of hands of the people who are unaware of the addictive potential of alcohol? Anyone? That's the point. This case is a crime against reason.

Street Talk

Actually these men can blame their behavior on their addiction. Once they do that they do become aware of the addiction and then need to address the problem. Alcohol is a drug, and being a drug is highly addictive. Now let us not make the mistake of thinking that blaming it on their addiction is an excuse. Now if we were talking about Cigarettes or anything that has caffeine added to it, we could have a whole different conversation here. :)

I still think its sad . Especially when crimes are commited on a blackout. When people are powerless over a disease they have then fail to seek help and commit a crime, it is just so sad and unfortunate for both parties. I'm not making excuses for them but i come from a family of alcoholics and when they are drunk and high, it is not the person they truly are..

Yes, it is sad but it is also not an excuse. They committed a crime but instead of working toward accepting responsibility they are shifting the blame on liquor companies. No one forced them to drink. No one forced them to continue drinking. They are only doing this for their selfish needs and only proves that they are not ready to be back in society. They will not accept their responsibility for their actions and they will end up right back in prison.
