Shocking Allegations In the Casey Anthony Capital Murder Case

Prosecutors in Orlando, Florida are seeking the death penalty in the capital murder case against Casey Anthony. In addition to murder in the death of her 2 year old child, Caylee, Anthony is being charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and misleading police officials. The misleading law enforcement charge stems from the several months that Anthony claimed that her daughter had been abducted by a former babysitter.

Two year old Caylee Anthony was last seen alive on June 16, 2008, but her disappearance was not reported to police until a month later when her grandmother, Cindy Anthony called 911 to say that her daughter had admitted someone had “stolen” baby Caylee. The child’s remains were found in December with confirmation that the skeletal remains were Caylee coming several days after the initial discovery. Testimony in the second day of the trial was less shocking but no less damming, with a neighbor testifying that Casey had borrowed a shovel and others testifying to Casey’s attitude and behavior in the days between the disappearance of the child and the discovery of her remains.

The defense opened with a verbal equivalent of an atomic bomb by stating that Casey did not murder her daughter and that the entire time that the child was missing, Casey was living in a state of denial because of repeated sex abuse at the hands of her father, George Anthony as well as her older brother, Lee. Jose Baez also claimed that his client knew exactly what had happened to her daughter and that her only crime was not coming forward to “do the right thing.” The defense’s story relating to the day Caylee died was that Casey, George and Caylee Anthony were in the home when Caylee was discovered to be missing. Both Casey and her father looked for the toddler, with George Anthony finding her, dead in the above ground swimming pool.

The prosecution contends that the child was killed by pieces of tape covering her mouth and nose and then stored in the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car before being discarded in the woods several miles from the Anthony home. In preliminary examination, Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mother, admitted that there was an odor to the vehicle. It was Cindy Anthony that made the initial phone call to 911 to report her granddaughter missing. At the time, Casey Anthony told police that her former babysitter had taken the child and that she feared for her safety.

Baez claimed that it was the repeated abuse that made Casey Anthony make up these stories and to continue to believe that her daughter had been abducted. The prosecution counters that Casey Anthony’s behavior after her daughter was gone, which had included posing for bikini pictures, entering contests at nightclubs and more paint a picture that is much darker than the defense would like the jury to believe. Anthony showed little emotion in the court room on this explosive first day, only crying briefly when a picture of young Caylee’s skull was shown.
