The End Of Privacy, Identity, And Crime

The concept of privacy, identity, and crime may soon yield to the evolution of DNA research, GPS technology, and the availability of computerized data banks. DNA profiling offers a highly accurate method of individual identification. DNA profiles can be securely linked to location through GPS technology, and computerized data making it possible to verify identity, location and important personal information at the same time.

DNA

DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a chemical that occurs inside every cell of a person’s body and contains the genetic code which determines how the cell makes proteins that allow the human body to grow and function normally.

DNA is a reliable identifier, unique to an individual (except in the case of identical twins and bone marrow transplant recipients), unchanging throughout one's life, and found in all of one's cells. DNA testing on biological samples such as skin, saliva, semen, blood or hair is used in a variety of ways such as establishing paternity, identifying siblings and helping to convict or exonerate suspected criminals. When DNA evidence is properly collected, preserved and kept from contamination the chances that two unrelated people have identical profiles has been estimated at less than one in one billion.

GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites orbited by the U.S. Department of Defense. Originally developed for military applications, the government made the system available for civilian use in the 1980’s. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. GPS receivers accurately identify position to 3- 15 meters on average when not hampered by dense forest, deep canyons, tall buildings, and some indoor space interference.

Computerized Data Banks

Computerized databases contain a vast array of personal information documenting every important event from cradle to grave including: birth, marriage, real estate purchases, licenses, arrests, lawsuits, and health records etc. This information is available for sale to law enforcement agencies, employers, creditors, landlords and increasingly to anyone interested in purchasing your personal information. An individual’s right to privacy is gradually being eroded by the economics of commerce in the information age.

Universal Identification

I predict that the DNA profile will replace the social security number as the universal identifier. The DNA profile will be determined at birth and everyone will be issued a DNA identification card. These new ID cards will blend information technologies, including DNA, GPS, and computerized data bases to quickly identify each individual, determine their location, and personal data with a simple card swipe which will be required for virtually every transaction including routine purchases, traffic stops, and passing security checkpoints at airports.

Summary

The economic advantages of transparency will rule the day. Big data based on DNA ID transactions will revolutionize the notion of identity, privacy, and crime. Everyone’s behavior will be knowable and available to all those authorized to obtain it. Criminals will have no way to avoid detection or to escape and will be quickly apprehended. Violent and career criminals and other dangerous individual’s will be easily monitored and selectively incarcerated while lower risk individuals will be efficiently supervised and rehabilitated in the community.

Street Talk

James, this article is jampacked with a description of technologies, that I for one, know mostly by name... this is a very informative and valuable article, definitely one of your best. But I worry about your prediction that "An individual’s right to privacy is gradually being eroded by the economics of commerce in the information age."
