Dr Conrad Murray: Guilty Of Involuntary Manslaughter

Dr. Conrad Murray's trial has concluded with a guilty verdict. Murray was found guilty of the charge of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of Michael Jackson after just nine hours of deliberations by the jury. Prosecutors painted Murray as money hungry, willing to bend the rules of ethics to meet the demands of the ailing pop star as he worked toward his come back tour. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren bashed the defense team, taking them to task for pointing fingers at everyone but Conrad Murray.

The defense hinged on Murray's assertions that he was only away from Jackson for two minutes to use the toilet during which time, the singer injected himself with propofol, a powerful drug typically given during surgeries. Defense attorney Ed Chernoff contended that the prosecution did not prove that a crime had been committed but was willing to concede that there was medical negligence. The case should have been reviewed by the state medical board not heard in a criminal court.

Prosecutors reminded the jury that they had to accept that ten or more people lied to allow the story that Murray and the defense were trying to tell. The coroner ruled that Jackson's death came from "acute propofol intoxication" and found a mixture of two other drugs in his system.

From the start, the use of the drug propofol was pivotal to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. Typically given in hospital settings, it is a powerful drug requiring very close monitoring during its use for safety. In addition, resuscitation equipment needs to be on hand when it is administered in case of a mishap. Murray, who had been hired specifically to give Jackson an infusion of the drug each night because he could not sleep did not have either monitoring or resuscitation equipment on hand. Experts, including one brought in by the defense also questioned the use of this particular drug to treat insomnia because it is not labeled for that condition.

Murray has come under fire from the community as an unethical, money hungry man who agreed to do something that he knew he should not for the $150,000 per month salary he was getting. He was not keeping proper records of Jackson's health statistics or dosing schedules and did not immediately tell emergency workers that Jackson had been given propofol or how much had been given. Evidence also established that the 911 call was substantially delayed after Murray found Jackson unresponsive in his bed.
