Jerry Sandusky Arrested: New Charges Filed By States Attorneys Office

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly has announced that former Assistant Football coach Jerry Sandusky has been arrested following new charges involving two additional victims. The two victims, identified in documents as Victims Nine and Ten, came forward to testify that Sandusky sexually assaulted them when they were 11 or 12 years old. Kelly said that the testimony given by the two new victims is consistent with that given by the other eight victims in the case.

According to Kelly, the actions of Sandusky show that he had a pattern of grooming victims, starting with activities and outings then moving on to inconsequential touching. From there, the boys all state that Sandusky would begin hugging, touching and tickling them, at first in a playful, almost fatherly and affectionate way but then it would become sexual in nature.

Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola is very unhappy with the arrest and the way that it was done. He has accused the prosecutor's office of trying to turn the whole thing into a media circus. He also questioned why he was not told that the arrest was about to be made, giving him the chance to bring Sandusky to the police station himself instead of having to have him cuffed and driven away from his home in a police car. Amendola pointed out that Sandusky turned himself in when the initial indictment was released in early November and would have done so at this time. Bail has been set in the amount of $250,000. Amendola said that there are some concerns that Sandusky will be unable to make arrangements to get that amount paid. A preliminary hearing on the new pending charges will be held early in the week.

Sandusky's new charges include four counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, all carrying penalties that can include up to twenty years in prison and more than $25,000 in fines. Additionally, he has been charged with one count of indecent assault, two counts of endangering child welfare and two counts of corrupting minors. Those charges carry the potential for seven years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.

Meanwhile, Penn State University officials are bracing themselves for the first of threatened lawsuits to be filed by the victims. The Second Mile, the charitable foundation set up by Sandusky is reporting that it has lost the majority of its funding in light of the scandal and may have to close operations soon. One of the victims has filed an injunction to prevent the charity from breaking up which would have stopped lawsuits holding the Second Mile responsible.
