Michael Jacksons Doctors Case Goes to Jury for Deliberation

After six weeks of sometimes contentious legal debate, the seven men and five women that make up the jury for the Conrad Murray trial will be deciding the case. Nearly fifty different witnesses took the stand during that trial with over three hundred different exhibits, including an audio tape in which the slurred voice of Michael Jackson talked about his pain and lack of a childhood. Closing arguments between the two attorneys took just over five hours in total and were no less acrimonious than the rest of the trial had been. Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, accused of giving the ailing singer a drug that was not appropriate for home use, in a poorly equipped setting and without adequately monitoring him.

Prosecutor David Walgren told the jurors that Jackson's death was caused because of an "obscene experiment" performed by Murray. Murray, who had been hired by Jackson to care for him at his home, reportedly gave him the powerful, surgical anesthetic propofol to treat his insomnia without the right monitoring equipment and then leaving the room while the singer was dying. The state also contends that instead of immediately trying to adminster CPR or calling 911, that Murray took steps to conceal some of his actions and delayed that phone call for nearly an hour. In addition, Walgren told jurors,Murray failed to reveal the exact types and amounts of the drugs that were given to Jackson on that day.

Walgren dismissed much of the testimony of one of the defense's experts as nothing more than junk science. That witness, Paul White, was used by the defense to support their own claim that Jackson had swallowed a large number of lorazepam pills and then while Murray was not looking, gave himself a syringe filled with the powerful propofol. The defense stated that Murray had taken no more than two minutes to go to the toilet at that time.

Defense Attorney Ed Chernoff contended that the state did not have a case and that there was no real crime at all. Chernoff told the jurors that the state's case hinged on the lies that were told by the key eyewitnesses to the crime, including the security guard Alberto Alvarez. According to testimony given by Alvarez, Murray had ordered him to put bottles of medications in a bag before he was allowed to call 911. But, Chernoff also stated that others, including a personal assistant and a security chief also lied on the stand. Walgren was quick to count the number of people who "lied" according to Chernoff.

In addition to the testimony of those that were there, the jurors heard from four other doctors, including those who were called by the defense team who all agreed that they would have never given propofol for insomnia nor in a home setting.
