Black And White Interracial Dating And Marriage

Black and White people have been in relationships since the slave era. However, anti-miscegenation laws forbidding sex and marriage between races were once on the books as early as the 1600s. Although this law addressed Black-White relations, it became applicable to all races as well. It was not until 1967 that miscegenation laws were declared unconstitutional and repealed. This law prohibited Blacks from inheriting property from Whites. As a result, interracial dating and marriage between Black and White couples are on the rise, especially with students and those in interracial neighborhoods.

Black and White interracial dating while on the rise, isn't problem free. Yes there might be true loves and great relationships but love between two isn't always color blind. When others are involved, it might change the picture. Black and white interracial couples are the most visible, a contrast that gets attention anywhere. The attention isn't always great and each individual needs great inner strength to deal with outside factors that might make dating interracially more stressful than it should be. Family members on either side sometimes have strong feelings against interracial dating.

Recently a Kentucky couple was denied a marriage license due to being a Black-White couple. What effect does this have on the relationship depends on the individuals. Can each partner withstand various obstacles as they celebrate their love is the big question. The great thing about an interracial dating bond is that if it works out it could be a great inner strength builder and really contribute to both individual's personal growth and inner confidence as well as their children's confidence.

For some, the personal growth aspect is overshadowed about day to day concerns. Schools for children, marriage licenses, going out for dinner. Many things we take for granted are now the focus of what to do or not to do for many Black-White interracial couples. There are still some churches who have banned interracial couples from their congregation. For others, a Black interracial dating or marriage relationship is nothing to think about at all, just a part of the facet of things that require thought and an optimistic outlook.

Black and White interracial couples have a bond like any other couple. Are they strong enough to withstand stares, refusals to churches , restaurants, and marriage licenses. And for the road ahead will their children be likewise able to withstand potential discrimination that may occur down the line. One stereotype of an interracial black marriage is a life of fried chicken and poverty. This may be one of the reasons fewer black women and white men interracial couples tie the knot. Stereotypes sometimes have not only implications but in some cases expectations. The same can't be said for black men and white women. Black men, especially successful black men, are more apt to tie the knot interracially than black women.

Black and White couples have been part of America since the beginning of the country. Each partner in the relationship brings their own inner strength. This bond can be strong enough to ride through negative periods of a relationship. Or, if not strong, can cause the relationship to falter. In many ways, a black interracial dating or marriage relationship is not unlike any other relationship. It's just another relationship with different facets
