Cruise Ship Runs Aground Off the Italian Coast : Were Actions By the Captain And Crew Criminal?

The Costa Concordia had sailed the same route countless times, all without incident or problems. So, prosecutors are left wondering exactly what caused the ship to run aground off the Italian coast on Friday the 13th, damaged so badly that it ended up with a large gash on its side before tipping over. In addition, prosecutors are also looking at reports that the cruise line's crew members repeatedly told scared passengers that there was nothing to worry about, that technical difficulties were behind the blinking lights and eventual power failure. Those delays kept passengers from being prepared for worsening events and prevented some rescue efforts.

So far, divers have recovered at least thirty bodies from the water and searched the damaged hull of the ship to find the remaining passengers that were still unaccounted for. By Saturday, that number had been reduced from roughly four dozen to around forty or so.

Experts are calling the grounding and its subsequent events one of the most dramatic cruise ship accidents of recent times. The ship, carrying more than four thousand passengers and crew members ran aground just as dinner was being served, and floundered for nearly an hour before tipping onto its side. Power flickered and then went out, leaving the frightened passengers to crawl along on the ground, often feeling their way ahead of them with their hands to avoid obstacles and others. The ship sustained major damage from striking something under the water, ending with a gash that measured 160 feet in length.

Prosecutors have detained the Costa Concordia's Captain, Francesco Schettino on a number of charges including suspected manslaughter, abandoning the ship before all others and causing a shipwreck. In addition, the prosecutors are asking why the captain chose a route that was so close to the shore line as well as demanding explanations for why the crew was so ill prepared for an emergency of this type. Prosecutors will also look at the delay in rescue efforts once it became evident that they were needed.

The ship, part of the US based Carnival Corporation was on the route that it typically used, according to the company's executives who have also defended the actions of all crew members. Executives are also disputing initial reports which said that the captain was with the passengers having a meal when the ship was run aground. Both crew members and executives have confirmed that the captain was on the ship's bridge when the incident occurred.

Street Talk

I am shocked that the captain is now being accused of standing on shore and refusing to even answer the coast guard while there are still people being found. The divers who are searching below the boat for bodies are in terrible danger but keep going right back down.

Hard to believe that this ship went down. This is quite a reputable company who I've considered cruising with in the past. Apparently the cruise line does this exact run once a week (52 times a year). Crazy to think that until now they have missed this part of the sea floor every time.
