Sometimes yes and sometimes no. We want what we want. So we can search through the several experiences that I have saw and done.
In the beginning that I rode quads, I had a two stroke and about 250cc. That thing made me so happy. I rode up in the blue mountains with my friend. We went up and down and turned left and right at a slightly fast speed sometimes. There was ruts in some areas that were probable made by cars, trucks or dirt bikes. I was shocked at first riding along those ruts. But, after a while, it got easier for me to drive along them. There was not much area there that I thought I needed an 4x4.
After a while, I traveled to other places to ride atvs. There was juniper forest, sand lakes at Pacific ocean and more. There are several areas in those places that you can ride in a 2x4 quad. But there was times and places when you think you need a 4x4. My friend would travel up a spot sometimes in juniper forest that I thought I needed an atv 4x4 to get up it. Some times you can get up tall, steep hills even with a 2x4. But, you will feel comfortable when you have a 4x4. Then you have the ability to go either way. Also, if you get stuck on the way up using the 2x4 part, then you can switch to the 4x4 and hopefully make it up.
Years ago I started going to Sand Lakes, Oregon at Pacific ocean. By the way, this is my favorite quad riding place. There are some different types of places to ride. There is long, wide and flat sand areas. There are wide, steep and tall sand areas. Some times you might need a 4x4 to get up there. In 2010 when I was there, I was riding a 250cc 2x4 quad and I went down a different area. I tried and tried to get up the area and I did not make it up there. My son got it up there. Well, that makes me wish I had a 4x4 then.
There was another area at Sand Lakes that I was told years ago that you should not go down there until you have a 4x4. So later I got a 4x4 and went down that area. It was easy to go down and more difficult going back up. But, I made it up sometimes.
Well, now I have a 400cc 2x4 and a 400cc 4x4. So, I can do some different rides. You can decide what you want. Any one will probably be fun.
